Gatsby is new money, but old money has to start somewhere. He grew up with nothing, became a lieutenant in the army and a war hero which is FaF, then went on to be a self made success story. He also invited Daisy and Tom to one of his ragers, then fucked Daisy while Nick distracted Tom. TFM
Love this! Gatsby is a little geed if you ask me, the whole desperate thing is very unbecoming. Tom on the other hand is FaF even though he cheats on Daisy, but she knows her place is in the kitchen so all is well in the end.
Nick, on the Buchanans: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made”
Jay Gatsby is flashy, new money. Tom Buchanan is a TFM though.
13 years ago at 12:36 pmReally? We even have to classify fictional characters now?
13 years ago at 12:51 pmGrappler, the old/new money conflict is a central theme in the book so Brolo’s comment is actually appropriate.
I personally don’t identify with Tom as a real man would treat his girl better, but he is old money.

13 years ago at 11:23 amGatsby just proves that you don’t always have to be Old Money to frat, it’s just a sign that someone comes from good stock. Tom fratted harder though.
13 years ago at 2:51 pmYou are aware he is a fictional character, right?
