Chargers Ownership Won’t Be Able To Look 100-Year-Old Fan In The Eye And Tell Him They’re Leaving
It’s the ultimate betrayal for a fan: the team which they’ve sworn allegiance to packing its bags and moving somewhere else. It’s a sad reminder that professional sports, as much as we make it a matter of the heart, is still very much a matter of business.
100-year-old San Diego Chargers fan Blake Talbot is the face of those tattered heartstrings.
There are several reasons for the Chargers highly likely move to Los Angeles. Qualcomm Stadium is falling apart and taxpayers aren’t willing to pay for a new bowl. The Rams are now officially headed to the City of Angels, meaning the Chargers would lose a large portion of their existing fanbase if they don’t do the same. And Goldman Sachs agreed to finance the Chargers if they make the move.
All big picture financial plays that leave Talbot, who is probably the oldest and most devoted Chargers fan, sorely in the dust. But how could they leave after seeing this video? How could they look him in the eye and tell him they’re leaving? They couldn’t. They’d have to sneak our during one of his twice daily power naps. Confronting him is just too heartbreaking.
Poor guy has been a season ticket holder since 1961. He’s lived through disappointing season after disappointing season, getting nothing in return but one measly Super Bowl appearance in ’94 (they got obliterated by the 49ers). And now they’re leaving for L.A.
It’s like wasting your entire college career on a girl who only gives you sex once in a blue moon, only for her to up and leave you after graduation for a Latino dude with sick dance moves and a daddy who works for Goldman Sachs. Except Talbot’s had blue balls for half a century. He’s had blue balls the majority of his natural life, until he got so old his balls couldn’t even turn blue anymore. They just filled with dust. And now he’s teamless.
His wife says in the video that watching the Chargers every football Sunday was the key to his longevity. It gave him something to do. Something to believe in. Now what does he have to live for? A loving wife and children? Fuck that shit. The Chargers killed this man..
h/t ESPN
first off the stadium is fine. they just need boxes to sell to make money. it’d be cheaper for them to just add those
second and most importantly, the chargers should bring home some wins before they have the audacity to ask for new shit. even if we had boxes to sell I’m not sure why anyone would want to buy them for a shit team.
10 years ago at 2:03 pmI agree with the wins part, but Qualcomm is a piece of shit, and it looks outdated as fuck.
10 years ago at 2:19 pm1st. Stadium is not fine. It’s a fucking disaster. It’s shared with SDSU, and is just a pit in general. And its location in Mission Valley isn’t desirable.
10 years ago at 2:28 pm2nd. The Chargers have a rich history of winning every game except the big one, which I know is important, but we dominated the 80’s with Fouts and Winslow, went to the Super Bowl in 95 only to get beat by one of the better teams ever in the 49er’s, and ever since Rivers has taken over we are 96-73 with 5 playoff appearances.
3rd. It’s the cunt of an owner we have. Dean Spanos has time and time again fucked this franchise with false promises and idiotic personal hirings, draft picks, and management. Remember Ryan Leaf? Remember when we went 14-2 and lost the Divisonal because LT was had one leg and then he fired our head coach the next day? He’s a cancer.
4th. Chug Bleach.
And I’m sorry that I had to go preachy, but this is my football team man. I know money talks, but you can’t just rip my football team out of my city.
10 years ago at 2:30 pmI agree Qualcomm is an old stadium. but its structurally sound. I also agree that we shouldn’t have fired our coach for making it deep in the playoffs with LT. where I disagree is with the me chugging bleach part. I also disagree with what we did in the 80’s. not that you’re wrong, but in all honesty who gives a shit what happened 30 years ago. I care about how we are now. also the fact that the stadium is shared with the Aztecs is irrelevant…plenty of teams share stadiums (take NY for example, take the clippers, kings and lakers for example) that has 0 impact on the chargers ability to perform in said stadium.
10 years ago at 2:39 pmPreach. We had an awful year this year but for the most part have been competitive in the Rivers era, as well as before that.
10 years ago at 2:36 pmI love Rivers, the dude rocks a bolo tie. He is also one of the best trash talkers in the NFL, and does so while never uttering a curse word.
10 years ago at 2:37 pmRemember when the Chargers wouldn’t pay Drew Brees as a top “5” franchise quarterback? Well I do because Drew came down here to New Orleans and won us a Super Bowl 3 years later. Brees is still arguably one of the best, if not the best quarterback in the NFL.
10 years ago at 6:25 pmYou’re an idiot if you think he’s number 1 or even top 5.
10 years ago at 7:08 amThe only people who are Chargers fans are in San Diego. If they leave they’ll lose there whole fan base. But money trumps all I guess
10 years ago at 2:22 pmtrump TFM
10 years ago at 3:05 pmMoney trumps all, just like the SEC. #Fact #45-40 #LostTheirOnlyRealGame
10 years ago at 5:39 pmLet it rest man.
10 years ago at 10:59 pmCorrect me if I’m wrong, but did they not announce last night that the Rams are moving to LA?
10 years ago at 2:43 pmThe Chargers have until this time next year to decide if they want to move and share the stadium, and if they pass the Raiders have the option to join the Rams.
10 years ago at 3:05 pmRoll phins
10 years ago at 3:10 pmIt’s OK, he’ll forget by tomorrow.
