College Football’s Top 25 Ranked By How Smart Their Players Are
On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff selection committee released their initial top 25 rankings and subsequently riled up the whole football world. Yesterday, the NCAA released the graduation rates for all programs. What better way to unite the two than ranking the teams based on how dumb their players are based off graduation rates? How are graduation rates calculated, you ask? Well the NCAA has their own extensive criteria for calculating them.
From the ABC 27:
They are based on the latest Graduation Success Rates, released Wednesday by the NCAA, which cover incoming freshmen classes from 2005-08 and calculates the percentage of all athletes who earned a degree within six years of entering school.
Since ABC 27 had the AP top 25, I looked up the CFP top 25 teams. Taking the NCAA’s data, here are the CFP top 25 teams ranked in reverse order based on how smart their players are:
25. Oklahoma State – 54%
24. Houston – 56%
23. Ole Miss – 60%
22. Oklahoma – 65%
21. Michigan State – 66%
20. Utah – 69%
19. LSU – 70%
18. Iowa – 71%
17. Michigan – 72%
16. Mississippi State – 72%
15. Memphis – 72%
14. Florida State – 73%
13. Toledo – 73%
12. Texas A&M – 74%
11. Baylor – 74%
10. Florida – 78%
9. Ohio State – 82%
8. Temple – 82%
7. Clemson – 84%
6. TCU – 84%
5. Alabama – 86%
4. UCLA – 89%
3. Notre Dame – 93%
2. Northwestern – 97%
1. Stanford – 99%
How about Okie Lite coming in hot with the worst graduation rates of them all? No surprises with Stanford and Northwestern leading the way. I’m pretty sure when you are recruited to one of those schools, it’s pretty much assumed that you’re already pretty smart and will be graduating no matter what. I am a little shocked to see Florida State in the middle of the pack..

The top schools are going to get more academically inclined students and other schools are going to be more rigorous than others. I doubt the Michigan curriculum is equal to Mississippi State, but Mississippi State likely doesn’t give a damn what your grades were in high school.
