Basically he didn’t want to sell out. He saw something wrong in the way white execs were taking the direction of the show where the humor was often based around racial stereotypes. It’s really understandable and not too crazy, Chappelle would’ve liked the money, but didn’t want to give up his dignity. That’s respectable, dumb, but respectable.
