Florida State SGA Votes To Ban Fans From Wearing Native American Headdresses To Games

Update 1: A member of the SGA notified me that FSU News had some inaccurate information. The Senate has the opinion that headdresses should be banned and that we recommend the administration to take action. So now the ball is in FSU’s court.

For years, Florida State fans have donned Native American headdresses to games to show their support for the Seminoles. In fact, in 2005, FSU and Seminole Tribe of Florida came to an agreement that the school could use the Seminole name, logos, and images.

Well, the headdress wearing is coming to an end, as we all knew it eventually would, thanks to the Student Government Association at FSU. On April 20th, they voted to ban all headdresses from being worn in any athletic arena.

From FSU News:

Resolution 15, as described in a document obtained by the FSView, states that “the wearing of any Native American headdresses shall no longer be permitted into athletic arenas at FSU.”

The resolution was voted yes by 27 members, no by four and five abstained.

Okay, I get where they are going with this. The headdresses that fans typically don are not the ones that the Seminole tribe historically wears, so the fans are not portraying them correctly. Yes, it’s nice in theory to stop wearing them altogether, but this ruling does infringe upon the First Amendment rights of FSU students. There is no law in America that limits a person’s choice in attire, so why should there be one on FSU’s campus? Besides, what if an actual member of the Seminole tribe wanted to wear a headdress to the game?

Get it together, FSU.

I would be ok with this if it was because they were blocking the view of the people behind them.

This is one of the biggest problems I have with PC culture and SJW’s. It doesn’t seem like the Native Americans have a problem with it. It’s just dumb white liberals who try to speak for these minorities that are perfectly capable of speaking for themselves. They create problems that aren’t there and “protect” minorities that don’t want to be protected. Which is really racist when you think about it, because these white liberals are telling them how to live their lives.

Gonna have to disagree with you on this one. Native Americans I know have expressed their annoyance by it. I think it’s more of a “you don’t know any Native Americans because they’re a tiny percent of the population” thing that makes you think they don’t care. Lap me if you want, but I think war bonnets (and bindis) are about the only form of “cultural appropriation” that anyone can actually say isn’t ridiculous to be upset about, since they’re religious or denoting of great honor, and the wearers typically aren’t religious nor have they been recognized as worthy of said honor by the cultures they’re emulating.

(For clarification, free speech should trump all and people should have the right to wear them at public institutions even if they’re being an asshole by doing so in my opinion, and fuck anyone who says having dreads or something is cultural appropriation and wrong)

I understand what you’re saying, but what I’m talking about is in this specific circumstance, the Seminole nation allowed FSU to use this cultural clothing.

Interestingly enough, take for example how we named an attack helicopter after a Native American tribe; the Apache. The US military actually went to the tribes that still exist today and got their permission to use the name, and the tribes even gave their blessings, performing ritualistic ceremonies on the helicopters. I agree it’s reasonable to get upset about, but just an interesting aside.

Just like Affirmative Action, it is literally subliminal racism at it’s best. It suggests minorities are incapable of being smart and lowers the qualifications for them, whatever race they may be. Personal Ex: To get into nursing school, at TxTech “you” had to have a 3.8 GPA or whatever the rate is. My white*, (key aspect), friend applied with a 3.9 and did not get in because they had not accepted enough black students. So now a black student with a 3.6 who applied will get in because to get in as a black* student, you only* need a 3.6 Nothing against blacks, but it’s absolute horse shit that we don’t take the smartest kids period.

Apparently how it works is that the TxTech Nursing Program has to accept a certain number of blank race and blank race. Why the fuck don’t we just accept the smartest- most qualified- be them black, Chinese, White, or Female?

Although I hate Affirmative Action, it is not stating that minorities are incapable of being smart, it is stating that percentage wise, minority parents make less money than whites parents, therefore their kids have less opportunities because of financial reasons. It’s not racist, it’s just a fact. This is coming from a somewhat privileged white guy by the way.

But you best believe I would’ve been pissed if I didn’t get into the college of my choice, and some black guy 50 spots behind me did.

I understand that perspective. I’m glad we both can agree that it’s bullshit that colleges don’t accept the smartest of the batch. This whole idea that everybody is entitled and deserves a shot at everything is absolute pussy shit. Life isn’t fair and I want the best qualified doctor operating on my body, not some SJW.

FSU is at the mercy of the Seminole Tribe…if they don’t like the headdresses FSU must comply.

Also FSU really isn’t in a position to take any more negative press

When will the stop people from wearing Viking helmets at Minnesota games? It’s an insult to my European heritage, it’s racist.

Don’t they know football games are a safe space?
