For The First Time In Recorded History, University Of Iowa Greeks Were Arrested Less Than Their Non Greek Peers

Unimaginable news out of Johnson County today. For the first time since the the University of Iowa decided to keep the statistic, both fraternity and sorority members were arrested or cited less often than their non Greek Hawkeye peers.

From The Gazette:

Last semester, 1.17 percent of all UI undergraduate women were arrested or cited, compared to .83 percent of UI sorority members, according to the data. While 2.13 percent of all UI undergraduate men were arrested or cited in spring 2015, 1.99 percent of fraternity members faced a charge that semester — the lowest on record for Greek men.

That means UI sorority members have reduced their arrest and citation rates to just 71 percent of all undergraduate women on campus, and UI Greek men have cut their rates to 93 percent of their male counterparts.

“These numbers represent an important change in culture and behavior,” [Vice President of Student Life Tom] Rocklin told The Gazette in an email. “I’m pleased that members of the University of Iowa fraternity and sorority community have chosen to align their actions with their values.”

In 2011, after 4 percent of sorority members and 8.5 percent of guys in fraternities got into trouble with Johnny Law, a policy was enacted that required all of Greek life to maintain an arrest and citation record lower than overall rates for undergraduate students of the same gender. It only took four years, but IFC and PAN organizations have officially met that policy campus wide.

Upset City! Iowa Greeks are either fucking saints or just getting much better at hiding their illegal activity. I’m guessing the latter, but it doesn’t matter. Score one for the “good guys” and chalk it up as a W.

Suck it, fraternity haters!

Instead of the wage gap between men and women look at the arrest rate between men and women. #hillaryforprison2016

How unbelievably degrading is it that these self righteous pricks would single out the Greek community and set a standard that they, and only they, must get arrested less than other students who don’t put themselves in a distinction of one or another? Hell, if they set that standard for any other group there would be cries of racism, privilege, or whathaveyou.

If they kept this statistic for African American students, the ensuing shitstorm would be felt worldwide

Just keeping of the statistics mind you. God forbid you actually put them in a different bracket for punishment.

Which would be bad. Holding any group to a different standard for something like this is bull.

Hear, hear. The Iowa administration can go fuck themselves for enacting this rule. As reparations, the school should either give the Greek committee “credit” for future infractions or put the rest of the student body on social probation.

Why the hell was a policy that said Greeks need to be arrested less a thing? Is that punishment for the higher GPAs?

You guys are so far behind Reddit this time that I can only think, maybe you actually don’t pull all your stories from there?

Iowa student life decided to keep track of arrest and citations for Greeks a couple of years ago and they use a tier system to punish houses who are have arrest rate higher than the all male/all femal average. Houses on a “tier” get limited socials and formals and there are different levels of punishment depending on what tier your house is one. The whole system is completely fucked. The reason the rate is below the all male average now is because to avoid getting in trouble houses generally drop members who get tickets so they don’t get on a tier.

The Tier system they have us on is fucked, almost all sororities and Fraternities here are on tiers. Pledges get dropped almost automatically if they get a ticket and we have to sneak around every weekend just to party
