Herschel Walker Says LSU’s Leonard Fournette Is Even Better Than He Was

If you haven’t had the chance yet, watch an LSU game. If for no other reason, you’ll get to see running back Leonard Fournette. We are only four weeks into the season, but Leonard Fournette already feels like a Heisman lock. He is destroying defenses with incredible, jaw-dropping runs week after week.

Older UGA fans know what’s up. There was a time, back in the day, where they had a similar beast carrying the football. His name was Herschel Walker, and he destroyed defenses that visited Athens during the early ’80s before taking home the Heisman Trophy. He came out and said Leonard Fournette is better than he was.

So, with Fournette playing out of his mind this season — and getting tons of comparisons to Walker — we went straight to Herschel for his thoughts.

“He’s better than I was,” Walker says … noting that Fournette is the clear frontrunner for the Heisman.
Herschel says he’s extremely impressed with Fournette’s athleticism AND his toughness — “He’s like a fullback because he can take punishment and keep on going.”

But Walker says there are two other RBs blowing his mind this season — Derrick Henry from Alabama and Nick Chubb from Georgia.

“I’m happy to see them play! People have been discounting running backs the past couple of years. These guys are bringing back the position.”

That’s not only high praise from a former great; that’s basically the highest praise Fournette will receive during his playing career — and he is only a sophomore. I can only think of two others, Earl Campbell and Bo Jackson, who were as elite as Herschel. Fournette is so young that he still has the opportunity to surpass them all.

I’m no LSU fan, but if LSU is on TV this season, you know I’ll watch. This guy is making running backs interesting again..
