Judge Rules Fraternity Must Become Coed At Wesleyan University

The Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Wesleyan University in Connecticut has lost its legal battle to remain a male-only organization.

The ruling came at the conclusion of a trial that started back in September 2014, when DKE sued Wesleyan for making all fraternities coeducational. Wesleyan made the move to abolish single-sex fraternities in wake of two sexual assaults, one in 2011 and one in 2013, that occurred at the Psi Upsilon house.

DKE argued that the university unlawfully overstepped its bounds with the mandate, as the fraternity house is owned by a private organization. The judge ruled in favor of the university.

DKE nationals, however, has refused to bend its rules, which contend that all chapters bar women from membership. So, instead of becoming coed, the DKE chapter at Wesleyan will be shut down for the time being. Another trial next year will settle the power struggle.

All other male-only fraternities at the university have followed suit and closed their doors, with nationals opting to shut down their Wesleyan chapters rather than allow women.

But not to worry, Wesleyan kids. You can still join any of the fine Greek organizations which were already coed, like the “Trash Frat,” which claims to have “risen from the sewage pipes of Wesleyan’s defunct fraternities” to “reflect on waste, pollution and desire,” or the Eclectic Society, which sent a dozen kids to the hospital — some with life-threatening injuries — after feeding partygoers a bad batch of Molly in February.

Wait. Hold the fuck up. So, one coed fraternity nearly kills a bunch of people, and all of them are permitted to continue business as usual (including the Eclectic Society), but a single male-only fraternity fucks up, and it’s sayonara for all the others, too? Seems fair..
