Mailbag: Choosing A Mediocre School Over A Good One, Being Too Big To Rush

Welcome to the TFM Mailbag, wherein I will answer your questions to the best of my ability. Send your questions to [email protected]. No topics are off limits.

Hey Wes,
I’m deciding between schools right now and I feel like I’m way out of touch. Everyone around me is way more stressed to get into top schools than I am. I’d rather go to an average school that has everything I want than work my ass off to get into a slightly better school. Like I know I could get into these schools if I wanted too, but what if I like the shittier school better overall? Does it really matter?

Thanks man.

The “top schools” are only valuable to you if they’ve got a great program for your field of study, so don’t put too much stock into the bigger and better names. If you really like a school that might be a little “shittier” than another one, go with the one you like. If, however, you plan on going into a field such as medicine or engineering where the school you go to matters quite a bit, then you’ll want to take that heavily into consideration. It sounds like there are plenty of “average” schools that have everything you need, so one of those should be just fine for you.

Hey Wes

I don’t know if its a problem or a blessing but I am big. Not Preston Lacy big from the movies Jackass, but I’m big. The pro to this is i can hold Jack and Avion in both hands while my small friends are past out from half a 30 pack. But since I am big, should I be worried of possibly not getting a bid in rush week? You always see the chiseled guys in the composites.

One thing I’ve never really discussed or been candid about is that these questions are mostly sent in by idiots who can barely spell their own name, and normally I’ll go through and edit reader questions for grammar and spelling so that people who read them will have some idea of what is being said. This time, however, I’ve chosen to leave the question in all its unfiltered glory. Let’s break this down to its awful components.

I don’t know if its a problem or a blessing but I am big.

Is your dick big? Are you well-built? Tall? Fat? Who knows.

Not Preston Lacy big from the movies Jackass, but…

The movies Jackass. Come on. Ryan Dunn didn’t die for this.

The pro to this is i can hold Jack and Avion in both hands while my small friends are past out from half a 30 pack.

This is an absolute sub-Saharan warzone of a sentence. Also, don’t shame your boys for catching some shuteye after knocking back 15 beers. That’s a lot of beer, and it sounds like you’re hogging up all the liquor in your big, stupid hands.

But since I am big, should I be worried of possibly not getting a bid in rush week? You always see the chiseled guys in the composites.

You should definitely be worried about not getting a bid, but your size is the least of your problems. I’m stressed out just imagining the logistics of you finding your way to to where Rush Week is even taking place all while remembering to breathe in and out every once in a while. The good news for you is that there are many fraternities that could use a big, dumb oaf to guard the door during parties. Good luck, you Lenny from Of Mice and Men> sounding motherfucker.

I won’t be taking any more questions this week, that last one tired me out.

Every frat has fat guys in it. No worries there. Just be confident and not an annoying idiot. They are looking for good guys not trying build a modeling portfolio.

Even “good programs” at schools are only valuable if you’re going to school after undergrad that is familiar with your school. I went to a school with a great program but many of the places I applied to work out of state weren’t familiar with the quality of the program.

Better grades were more important in that case.
