Mike Tyson Tells A Ridiculously Badass Story About Muhammad Ali

Screen Shot 2016-06-04 at 11.49.16 AM

As we mourn the loss of Muhammad Ali, the Greatest Of All Time, we remember all the phenomenal moments that littered his long, eventful life.

Ali had an amazing journey, from taking the belt from Sonny Liston and getting a new name from the leader of the Nation of Islam, to his refusal to be drafted for the Vietnam War. With his boastful personality and strong principles, He became an iconic ambassador of his sport.

But one of the coolest Cassius stories involves when the GOAT passed the baton to Iron Mike Tyson.

As a young fighter, Ali was Tyson’s hero. Tyson’s trainer and father figure, the legendary Cus D’Amato, was good friends with Muhammad. Young Mike would eavesdrop on their phone conversations.

One day, after Ali suffered from a disappointing loss to Larry Holmes, Cus let Mike talk to Ali on the phone. A 14-year-old Mike sobbed on the phone and vowed to get revenge on Holmes for Ali. Saying “when I get big I’m gonna get him for you”.

And he did.

Six years later, Mike fought Larry Holmes and kicked his ass. Ali was at the fight. And in a movie-like moment before the fight, Ali whispered to Mike “get him for me,” and Mike knocked Larry out in the 4th round.

Here’s a video of Mike summing up the story on Conan.

A ridiculously badass tale about a legend passing on the crown to another. This shit sounds like a movie.

R.I.P. Muhammad Ali.

60,000 Americans “dodged” the draft. As an Afghan vet myself, I can’t blame them.

They dodged the draft for a shady war that they didnt believe in. I dont see that as being cowardly

I still feel it is our duty as a citizen to not dodge the draft. Imagine how many PC libtards would be dodging the draft today because “they don’t believe in war”. You see where you saying its ok to draft dodge could go wrong? Go ahead and lap me. But dodging a draft is a cowardly act. If a war truly is unjust, then it will be challenged in our political system. That’s how things work.

He wasn’t a “citizen” – that’s the whole point. Ali argued he was a second class citizen in his own country. Why should he bother to go thousands of miles away and fight and die in the name of “freedom” when no one was willing to fight for or grant him his own freedom, right here at home in the good ol USA?

Ali did challenge it in our political system, he took it all the way to the Supreme Court, the highest court in our land, who found Ali to be in the right.

You don’t have the right to talk shit about someone else not serving in a bullshit “prolonged military engagement” unless you’ve been in a combat zone yourself, bud. And I hope the PC liberates stay out of the military, there won’t ever be a shortage of troops, I can promise you that.

Had to make an account so I could comment on how idiotic your comment is.

A coward is someone who runs from conflict because they are afraid. Ali was NOT afraid. Moreover, he did not run.

Ali grew up in Louisville during the height of segregation – his mother wasn’t allowed to ask for a glass of water from most of the businesses on his block, and he wasn’t allowed to train with the ‘best’ trainers or boxers cause he was black. When he was drafted. Ali did not run – nor did he hide: he instead refused to serve a country that treated him as a second class citizen, and told them consequences be damned.

He was stripped of his title, banned for 3 years, and threatened with jail time, but no one could change his mind. THAT is the definition of courage – sticking up for what you believe in regardless of what it costs you.

Was Gandhi also a coward for refusing to enlist or fight back?

I think you misunderstood. I wasn’t referring to Ali. I was referring to draft dodgers in general during Vietnam. I am uneducated on Ali’s personal story.

You gonna call out Trump for his draft dodging too, or are you just an asshole?

Apparently just an asshole. I was saying anyone specific, that’s pretty clear. So idk why you brought up trump. I stand by saying that dodging the draft to not protect your country is a cowardly act. I thought most members of the TFM community would agree with that but I guess I was wrong.

Cool story about mike Tyson. My grandpa was his first ring Doctor back when you was a young tank about 18 years old. My fathers family lived in cattskill New York and all knew the young Tyson, his trainer cus and all the legendary fighters that cus trained. My father told me that Tyson used to cruise around in a rolls Royce in this little red neck town and pick up high school kids to do drugs with them. My uncle was one of the those kids and Tyson is actually the reason my uncle has had problems with drugs all his life.

If it wasn’t Tyson, it would have been someone else to get your shitbag uncle on drugs. It’s a question of character and infirmity whether one becomes an addict, blaming someone else for addiction other than the addict is equally dubious.

Shut up. I didn’t blame mike Tyson but he was the first person to give drugs to my then 15 year old uncle. Hard to say no to someone so legendary.

Fratchet – You need to wise up. “Use” and “Addiction” are two different things. Its a person’s choice to use, yes. But addiction in many cases is also genetic. Dont confuse people who abuse versus people who get addicted.
