I must add, the US was outshot something like 19-4. You realize that a weaker team playing a stronger team goes for the ‘put everyone on defense all game and try to score on a breakaway’ strategy. This is the same thing North Korea did in the World Cup a few years back. The USA frequently plays this strategy because it is outmatched in games even against Ghana. It’s a cowardly plan that works on occasion. It’s nothing to be proud of. To play like a real team, they must take a page from the Europeans and actually play the sport, not stack-in-the-back bullshit like we keep seeing.
Even though Italy didn’t have all their starters their secondary squad payers still play in the Serie A, one of the worlds top leagues against good completion. Our players with the exception of a few all play in the MLS or some other shitty league where the talent level is so low. We will never be a real power until our youth system changes. Klinsman is actually doing his job and finding players that can compete. He’s scouting German-American players in the Bundesliga and recruiting them for us since Germany is overloaded with talent.
Deutschbag, what really hurts American soccer is that our best athletes play different sports. If LeBron James, Derrick Rose, Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, etc. played soccer, we would dominate. Their best athletes are going up against the guys who got cut from our (American) football teams. A 6’5″ kid in England is playing striker, while the 6’5″ kid in America is playing power forward. That’s why the US will never be on par with other teams in the world, and why the game against Italy was a big deal.

You are a fucking idiot if you think that Italy didn’t care about that match. If you actually watched the game you would see that we were dominating offensively for a large part of the first half. So the Italians had more shots. Several were from at least 20 yards out and were way off. Tim made some great saves also. When you score a goal, especially against a defensive line like the Italians, you get the fuck back and dig in the rest of the game. That’s exactly what we did and there is nothing wrong with that.
