KTVU Doesn’t Have Asiana Pilot Names, Uses Offensive Asian Sounding Substitutes
Sum Wan Phucked Up must have been working the booth at KTVU recently, because their coverage of the Asiana flight crash in San Francisco seems to have been a bit light on the fact checking when it came to pilot names. I highly doubt Sum Ting Wong, Bang Ding OW, Wi Tu Lo, and Ho Lee Fuk were piloting the flight on the day it not so gently returned to earth. Here’s the full screenshot.
For those unfamiliar, this is San Francisco’s Fox affiliate that made the mistake on air, and they are currently blaming the NTSB investigator from Washington for confirming the names to them. Nothing says “solution to racist news bit” like shifting the blame to a federal agency.
I have a question for KTVU: Did anyone bother to check this before putting it up? Legitimately? You’re telling us that several adult professionals in the TV news industry missed this? My 5-year-old cousin could have picked up on the joke. Better go out and get Sum Won Nu to handle the coverage from now on or at the very least consult lead tech guy Chiang Kai-Tech before you make your news slides.
KTVU issued a redaction on air after realizing they are, in fact, a bunch of idiots.

13 years ago at 1:07 pmI agree. I was expecting more support for this story from people on TFM. Pure genius.
13 years ago at 2:39 amThe NTSB blames the mistake on a summer intern. I want to see him working for TFM within the next week
