Nike Announces Plan To Grow The Game Of Golf, Will No Longer Make Equipment

Get your Vapor Pro drivers and Mojo balls while you still can, kids. Nike announced today that they will do their best to continue to grow the game of golf by transitioning almost completely out of it. Though they didn’t release an official timetable, the plan is to halt production of all clubs, balls, and bags in the very near future.

From Golf Channel:

“We’re committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel,” Nike brand president Trevor Edwards said in a statement. “We will achieve this by investing in performance innovation for athletes and delivering sustainable profitable growth for Nike Golf.”

With this huge shakeup in the golfing world, it seems there’s now some big time talent out in the free agent market. Tony Finau, my boy Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood, and of course, Rory and Tiger, are all just there for the taking. And now imagine their talent with a decent set of clubs for once. Rory’s ceiling just went to another fucking galaxy. Pencil him in for two majors next year, and what’s good for Rory is good for golf.

Nike essentially sacrificed themselves for the betterment of the game. Awfully nice of them to do it before Under Armour got into equipment making, too. Have to commend them for that type of selflessness. Probably saved Under Armour a dollar or millions from making the same mistakes.

So pour some out and enjoy the best commercials in the sport one last time.

I’m betting Rors and Koepka get on with PXG. They have the money, the exclusivity and the kinda youth appeal. Finau with callaway(again) no doubt though

“Imagine their talent with a decent set of clubs” killed me. Fucking truth though.

Didn’t under Armour acquire callaway? I know it was being talked about, but not sure if it ever came to fruition.

Sorry, but Rory winning majors is not good for growing the sport of golf in the United States. Spieth, Johnson, and pretty much any other American golfer winning majors is what is going to grow the sport. Not to say Rory is a bad guy just because hes European but just look at the Spieth effect. The guy wins two majors and suddenly everyone is wearing under armor golf t-shirts at every course. Watching Rory is fun, but he will never connect with the average American the way a homegrown super star can.

Right now it’s Day vs Johnson but it’s not the same. Sergio hated Tiger and there was always that clash that made it more fun to watch

Right but him winning isn’t going go get people excited. Him getting beat by spieth is what grows golf. Spieth is the key to it all Rory’s just the antagonist. Of course we need him to play well but him winning doesn’t help as much as him getting edged out by spieth on Sunday in the Open and taking their cup back home
