North-American Interfraternity Conference Dishes Out Ridiculously PC Costume Guidelines, Calls Out TFM
Four days from now, some poor fraternity chapter somewhere will find themselves under attack by an over-sensitive media horde. It happens every year around Halloween. There’s no getting around it.
Our friends at the North-American Interfraternity Conference — the same conference of morons that Lambda Chi recently chose to leave — released an absurd list of guidelines that they believe all chapters should follow to avoid offending the perpetually offended, furthering the idea that offended people are anything more than people too mentally weak to realize that life isn’t a lifelong orgy.
Their main point is to avoid “cultural appropriation,” which, in other words, is nothing more than a green light to dish out blanket false accusations.
From North-American Interfraternity Conference:
Cultural appropriation refers to a “particular power dynamic in which members of a dominant culture take elements from a culture of people who have been systematically oppressed by that dominant group.”
It’s bullshit. Every culture has been oppressed at some point in history. Let’s move on.
Viewed as funny, ironic, trendy, or an opportunity to be retweeted by TFM, dressing up as a Native American, painting oneself with blackface, or dressing as a homeless person is not only offensive behavior, but also correctable.
Is it likely to land your chapter in some hot water if you dress up as one of those examples? Yes. Don’t be a dumbass. However, to toss out incredibly general descriptive terms such as “funny, ironic, and trendy” as costumes you should avoid is taking this ridiculousness to a level of sensitivity that is completely unnecessary for the vast majority of the population. According to the NIC, your creativity should only be shown as long as a basement-dwelling, keyboard warrior won’t contact nationals and bitch.
I also find it comical they specifically call out us here at TFM in their poorly constructed guidelines. First of all, we don’t retweet anybody other than our brands and partner sites on the main account. A quick scroll could’ve shown you that. Some further research will take you to our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest, which is far from anything that could be considered offensive by even the most irrational and volatile corners of the internet. It’s all gorgeous girls and hilarious costumes. Being offended by boobs should result in a prison sentence.
The NIC continued their sad display of rationality by then attacking theme parties.
Theme parties are often glorified by TFM and TSM, in music videos, and they make major news headlines. This publicity is not what your chapter/organization needs or wants. Show the world what fraternities value by respecting differences and celebrating culture.
Nobody hates a good theme party. Furthermore, how are fraternities expected to celebrate culture without using any aspect of that culture? Contradiction? Nah, can’t be.
These days, parties have their own social media presence (i.e. #RedWhite&BetterThanYou #KanyeWesten #Back2BackWorldChamps). Have you thought about the impact of cultural insensitivity on individuals who follow you on social media?
#Back2BackWorldChamps. We’re all up in that noggin. I love it. Instead of standing up for the bullshit their chapters face daily, the NIC would rather bow to the illogical and impossible demands of the turbulent few.
With all of that said, I’ll give you my own personal suggestions for Halloween Costumes. Have fun with it. You’re in college, go all out. You know where to toe the line. Don’t be an idiot, and even still, life will go on..

I’m going to paint my balls black and go as SteveHolt.
11 years ago at 5:46 pmI don’t understand why people have such a desire to make fun of other people’s cultures. Especially Native American and Black. Native Americans suffered through the largest genocide in human history and blacks have obviously paid a huge price to make this country what it is. After all that us whites have benefitted off that history, why can’t we respect them enough to not make fun of who they are?
11 years ago at 6:18 pmYou must be a Black Native American
11 years ago at 6:30 pmThe worst thing about that is having to ride at the back of the trail of tears.
11 years ago at 8:05 pmBecause there’s quite a difference between actually oppressing a demographic of people and creating satire.
11 years ago at 11:45 pmI’ve never understood this viewpoint before. Yes Indians were treated poorly and that was a mistake, but it seems that people like you think that this is the first time in history something like this has happened. When hasn’t a larger empire took over someone else’s land throughout the course of human history? There’s a reason the world’s borders don’t look the way they did 600 years ago. It’s history, it already happened to people you’ve never met, get over it.
11 years ago at 5:54 amEasy to say “get over it” when it doesn’t affect you. Native Americans suffer the highest rate of police brutality and suffer from intergenerational PTSD. Black Americans are worth 16x less than white americans, financially. A white guy with a bachelors can get a job over a black guy with a bachelors, masters, and work experience. Race is a very touchy subject because of our country’s history. We still have a lot of work to do in America in regards to race, and people like you who are dismissive and callous towards it are part of the problem and not the solution.
11 years ago at 8:44 amI’m not saying that minorities are not disadvantaged in America and that there’s still a lot of racial issues to fix in this country. However, we aren’t going to move closer to a brighter future if we perpetually look back at the past.
11 years ago at 8:52 amCultural appropriation refers to a “particular power dynamic in which members of a dominant culture take elements from a culture of people who have been systematically oppressed by that dominant group.”
11 years ago at 6:22 pm.
Suck. My. Dick.
Kind of like how the people bitching about “Cultural Appropriation” systematically oppress members of what they decide is the “dominant culture” by not allowing them to portray elements of other cultures, simply because their culture has been deemed “dominant”, and that is offensive.
11 years ago at 11:12 pmAs a fraternity man myself, I see there is a major hypocrisy when it comes to “culturally themed” parties. If a geed wears fraternity letters, the members of that house will probably get angry and demand that they take them off. Yet when it comes to wearing a minority’s culture, we think that it’s acceptable and call them “liberal pussies” for feeling otherwise. There’s a huge double-standard when it comes to this.
11 years ago at 6:24 pmYou are not welcome here.
11 years ago at 7:39 pmFraternity, chapter, and school, asshole.
11 years ago at 8:16 pmIs no one gonna say anything about the star wars costumes? Like I want to titty fuck a stormtrooper right now and I feel like that’s not ok
11 years ago at 6:27 pmBeing offended by boobs. NF
11 years ago at 6:47 pmIf this means no toga parties, I’m out.
11 years ago at 8:17 pmplease don’t dress up as hippies on halloween. my culture is not a costume, man. also no one ever gets the smell right.
11 years ago at 8:28 pmIf this is what the world is coming to I wish to die at the ripe old age of 21
11 years ago at 8:45 pmIf Hilary is elected president being offended by boobs won’t be illegal. It will with me. Vote Trump to Make America’s Boobs Great Again
