North Carolina Town Thinks Solar Panels Cause Cancer And “Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun”
A North Carolina town rejected the addition of more solar panels this week because they’re hilariously afraid of science. A resident actually said, out loud, and on the record, that solar farms “would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland.”
Even worse, Jane Mann, a retired high school science teacher — no I’m not kidding — “questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her that solar panels didn’t cause cancer.” One can only imagine her views on vaccines, the world being flat, or gravity. No one can tell her those don’t cause cancer, either.
From Roanoke-Chowan News Herald:
“I want to know what’s going to happen,” she said. “I want information. Enough is enough. I don’t see the profit for the town.
“People come with hidden agendas,” she said. “Until we can find if anything is going to damage this community, we shouldn’t sign any paper.”
I get that energy is a contentious issue these days. Whether you want to save the environment or your bottom line, there are plenty of valid arguments for clean energy, just as there are good economic arguments in support of coal and oil. Still, valid arguments don’t include sucking up the sun’s energy or “Well, they can’t tell me it doesn’t cause cancer,” especially when plenty of actual scientists say just that.
Stupid isn’t a good look, regardless of your views..

I thought this was TFM, not MSNBC
10 years ago at 11:36 am“People being stupid” regularly gets reported here, Kenny. Also, regardless of what you think about “global warming,” clean energy makes good business sense. That’s not quite MSNBC material.
10 years ago at 12:12 pmSounds like something a liberal would say to get me to buy into clean energy. Yankee.
10 years ago at 12:35 amWhile none of that is true, you gotta be a fucking moron to buy into solar at this point. The panels barely pay for themselves over their lifetime in cost savings, and even then, that’s only because Obama and his pseudo-scientists give the industry a 70% subsidy every year. If you buy solar, you’re working against America’s energy interests.

10 years ago at 8:34 pmI think we should abandon every idea that is not immediately profitable as well. Who needs innovation anyway?
10 years ago at 9:18 pmEspecially when innovation meant beating the Commies to the moon.
10 years ago at 1:04 amAs an engineer who has worked in the energy field, they absolutely would be good for business in a small NC town, that probably needs it.
10 years ago at 1:24 pmIn the Carolinas too so I know the specifics. Although I also know the local folks aren’t very smart (ie Gamecock fans).

10 years ago at 3:08 pmI heard theirs multiple Bible verses condemning the use of solar panels. Not that I have read them myself as I am a Sundevil and therefore lacking in basic reading comprehension skills.
