Obama Renames Tallest Mountain In U.S. Because I Guess That’s A Thing Presidents Can Do

During his three day trip to Alaska, President Obama changed the name of the nation’s tallest mountain, Mt. Mckinley, to Mt. Denali — because when you’re the President I guess you get to do shit like that.

Alaskans have been fighting to change the name of Mt. McKinley, named after 25th U.S. President William McKinley, to Denali, the traditional Alaskan name, since 1975, but have had to fight President McKinley’s home state of Ohio on the issue. Many Alaskans point out that McKinley never even visited Alaska, which became a state over 50 years after he was assassinated.

From USA Today:

Mount McKinley — the 20,237-foot mountain and the tallest in North America — has been renamed Denali, as it was originally known by Alaska Natives before it was renamed to honor President William McKinley.

The mountain, which sits in the 6 million-acre Denali national park, has been known as Denali in Alaska since 1975. Under an order signed by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, the Denali name will also take effect for all federal usage and, therefore, on all official maps.

The order was signed Friday, but the White House asked that it be announced Monday as part of Obama’s trip to Alaska to highlight the effects of climate change in the Arctic. The White House said the name change “recognizes the sacred status of Denali to generations of Alaska Natives.”

Denali, meaning “the great one” in the Athabaskan language of Alaska natives, was the original name of the mountain. But when European Americans discovered it in the 19th century, they renamed it Densmore’s Mountain and, later, Mount McKinley in an effort to boost the presidential candidacy of Republican William McKinley.

But as Jewell noted in her order, “President McKinley never visited, nor did he have any significant historical connection to, the mountain or to Alaska.”

The name became official with the Mount McKinley National Park Act in 1917.

I can’t wait to see what President Trump renames it after he is elected. Trump Yellowstone National Park Resort And Casino? The Appalachian Trail Brought To You By Trump Towers? The possibilities are endless when a real estate mogul like Donald Trump is involved.

The move has angered a lot of Americans, but enthused mapmakers around the world — who will finally be able to sell a new version of the U.S. map for the first time in years. If you have ever wondered what the perks of being President were outside of living the lavish White House lifestyle, just know you have the opportunity to just rename mountains, too.

You are implying that Steve can actually talk a female into coitus… let that sink in.

Why would Donald Trump rename Mt. McKinley Trump Yellowstone National Park Resort And Casino or The Appalachian Trail Brought To You By Trump Towers? Fuck you, Steve Holt.

Not sure why this is getting lapped so much. Neither Yellowstone nor Appalachia have anything to do with Alaska. Other than that, the joke was fine, but in true SteveHolt fashion, there are two unnecessary and unfunny pieces of it, so calling it out seems like a natural reaction on your part.

Hate to break it to you bud, but there’s no shot in hell of Trump becoming the next president. Lap me all you want, but the man is an idiot.

Yeah he’s not leading the polls. The leading indicators of performance. Fucking mouthbreather.

He may be leading the Republican nomination polls at the moment, but Simple_C is right that he has no change to become the next President. There’s not a Democratic voter in the country that would vote for him.
Also, according to http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/president/ (which is the first result from googling “presidential election 2016 polls”, in case anyone thinks I spent time finding a site that supports what I wanted to say), he’s not leading any polls when matched up head-to-head against any of the top Dem nominees (Clinton, Biden, Sanders).
Finally, if you believe that Republican primary voters will actually nominate him, then I hope you also believe that the party is hopelessly fucking lost, and should just pack it in.

How on Earth did people keep up caring about the name of a remote mountain for 40+ years?

I think the real question is how does Steve Holt still have a job after releasing these lack luster articles on a consistent basis?

I just renamed the speed bump in front of my house Mt. Obama. I plan on keeping that name for 40+ years.

Steve, back when I was alive, the TFM community would have had a forum thread about you so vulgar that Grandex would’ve fired you faster than HelmetStickers.

Thanks D. Unfortunately, I did not survive, but was purged in Dorn’s Great Forum Putsch of 2014. Came back from the grave recently when I heard of a new evil called the Steve. His horrific articles have drawn the ire of the Trolling Dead. If he continues down this path, Shibby may have to intervene.

It’s a good place for him. But I can bring him back if necessary. For now, let’s leave him in peace.

In other news, I’ve somehow gone from rushee to JI in a single day. Thanks for the warm welcome, TechGuy.

Wait, I thought SteveHolt WAS HelmetStickers? I mean, I know he’s not a real person either way, but wasn’t the change from HS to SH just part of Grandex’s move towards real names in lieu of Dorn/Bacon/DeVry/Hammer/Boulevard, etc.?

Good to see ya, Oral. Personally I don’t take a stand on what they do as far as fake writers. I think though that it’s entirely possible they get some shitty ones, since better talent probably goes to more attractive workplaces.

He is their throwaway account to hide behind when they publish click-bait articles. Gotta pay the bills I guess.
