Prince Fielder’s Retirement Announcement Was Heartwrenching

Prince Fielder

A few weeks ago, Prince Fielder stepped to the plate and got some pitches that he normally drives 400 feet into the stands. Instead, he couldn’t do anything with them and went to his agent, Scott Boras, and told him something was wrong. The two of them just thought he’d be on the DL for some time. Instead, doctors told Prince that he’d never be able to play the game he loved again.

On Wednesday, Fielder held an emotional press conference in Arlington.

That’s just tough to watch. If you’re a fan of baseball, you know that the game is losing one of its greatest characters. Prince is a lovable guy who could fit well in any clubhouse. Not only was he an elite first baseman for many years in Milwaukee and Detroit, he was an all-around team player. When he was traded to Texas, Prince went to the skipper’s office of Jeff Banister and told him that the team is a better team with Mitch Moreland playing first and him stepping into a DH role.

Unfortunately for Prince, he had his first neck surgery in 2014 after coming to Texas, which ended his season. He wasn’t the same person after that. Teammates say he couldn’t turn his neck to talk to you and would have to turn his whole body to look at you. While he enjoyed a nice bounce-back season in 2015, his condition started to deteriorate this season when he couldn’t elevate anything thanks to his arm dragging through the zone.

If it was up to Prince, he’d get another surgery and get back out there, so kudos to the doctors for telling him that his quality of life was at risk and that he shouldn’t play the game anymore. Prince will be missed greatly. Hopefully he can get himself healthy so he can live a normal life with his family.

As someone who grew up in Milwaukee and watched Prince come up through the system; I can attest Milwaukee and the entire MLB is a better place with Prince Fielder! You will be missed Prince!!

Couldn’t agree more. He was an absolute inspiration. I’ll always miss the days of Prince and Braun in the heart of that lineup.

Phenomenal athlete and by all accounts a good man. Sad to see a career cut short by injury, but Prince earned the respect of any and all sports fans over a great career

Ended his career with the same total number of home runs as his dad (319.) This is sad as hell but that’s pretty frat.
