Recent Poll Tells You Whether Or Not Your “Sport” Is Really A Sport

Good news: you can now tell that girl who tried to tell you cheerleading is a sport that it is, in fact, not. Reddit conducted a recent poll, which asked people to label certain events as sports or not. Here are the results:

You may have noticed football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer are missing from this chart, because no one questions their legitimacy as real sports. However, a few other things jumped out to me from these results.

1. More people consider cheerleading a sport than they do hunting or fishing, which is just an absolute lie.

2. An astounding 80 percent of people surveyed think ultimate frisbee is a sport. That’s higher than curling, table tennis, weightlifting, archery, ice dancing, and sailing–which are all Olympic sports.

3. There is a big discrepancy when it comes to F1 racing and NASCAR, where more people consider F1 a sport than they do NASCAR. They are literally the same thing.

4. Zero percent of people surveyed consider CrossFit a sport. Thank God.

I love that some people consider poker to be a sport. This reminds me of one of my favorite Daniel Tosh jokes: “Poker’s a sport? Then put it in the Olympics and you can only play with what your country is worth.” The USA would dominate every single time.

I was surprised at how high up golf was considering most redditors have never played and don’t understand how hard it is.

Roughly 38% said Free Running/Parkour is a Sport? I’m honestly surprised it got higher than 0% considering there are no teams, no winners, losers, offense or defense, no judges, uniforms, scoring, timing, and competitions..

The way I see it, if it involves defense, a defensive strategy, or you can just play it with a defensive mindset then it is a sport. Your decisions affect the other players outcome. If not, then it is just a competitive activity.

Not even saying competitive activities are better or worse than sports. Like golf, love it more than most sports. Not a sport though.

There is defensive strategy in Chess and your actions affect the other player’s outcome. So Chess is a sport and Golf is not is what you’re saying?

I think a sport combines athletic competition and strategy. I don’t count cheerleading or skateboarding even though they both require a lot of athletic ability and I love watching both. I think a proper athletic competition requires an objective scoring system and the scoring is bullshit in any sport where it’s based off the judges opinion. It’s like art, it’s awesome but that doesn’t make it a sport. I also don’t consider running and swimming a sport even though those guys are often in better shape than baseball players and football players. It’s still just heavy cardio. Really good cardiovascular endurance is impressive but there’s more to being an athlete than any single metric of physical ability. This is a legitimate athletic competition but still not a sport. In my opinion.

It would be interesting to see what people think of motocross racing since a lot of people think it requires no physical strain yet skateboarding and bmx got pretty good recognition which is laughable.
