Rhode Island Sigma Chi To Return To Campus With Brand New $2.5 Million House
Everybody loves a good comeback story. The triumphant return of a hero is one of the most common themes in our culture’s films and literature. Just look at Shrek. Fraternities aren’t exempt from the comeback theme. Take a look at the University of Rhode Island’s Sigma Chi chapter.
In the ’90s, they were kicked off campus for a variety of reasons, most notably the arrest of an active for the distribution of cocaine from his room in the chapter’s then on-campus house. Thanks to the help of some powerful alumni, Sigma Chi was able to return to URI in 2007. There was one minor problem, however — they didn’t have have a house on campus.
Actually, they didn’t have a house at all. They university was still kind of pissed at them, you know, for the whole drug dealing thing, and they didn’t have one centralized off-campus house either. Despite these setbacks, Sigma Chi has been able to exist as an active chapter at URI without an on-campus house. Considering the school built its Alumni Center on Sigma Chi’s property after they were kicked off, moving back in really wasn’t an option.
Thankfully, again, due to some alumni involvement, URI Sigma Chi is going to be getting a new house. With a budget of around $2.5 million, the new house isn’t going to be too shabby. The house, which will sleep 41 members of the chapter, roughly two-thirds of the current brotherhood, will be located on Fraternity Circle.
Good choice for the site of the new house, guys. After all, it’s all about location, location, location, right? I imagine Fraternity Circle is definitely the ideal place to build a new fraternity house.
What features will the new house have? I don’t know, but with an initial budget of $2.5 million, I think you can let your imagination do the work here. Construction is expected to begin soon, and Sigma Chi expects the house to ready in time for the 2014-2015 school year.

Our house is going to have an elevator, and is sandwiched between AXiD, SDT, XO, and Sigma Kappa. We’re also stealing the majority of Sig Ep’s parking lot. IHSV.

11 years ago at 6:06 pmI’m a Sigma Chi. My chapter just got kicked off for hazing this last semester. We got on campus in 1949 and our house never had any renovations and was absolutely disgusting (rat infestations, everything broken). What the fuck nationals? Help us out too
11 years ago at 6:16 pmInter-Nationals didn’t do a thing to help us out, it was all Delta Sigma Chapter Alumni.
11 years ago at 6:17 pmNationals doesn’t do house stuff. I would say talk to Constantine Capital and your alumni board, but that doesn’t really matter at this point.
11 years ago at 7:01 pmI would just talk to Constantine in general.

11 years ago at 1:21 amIt actually is costing 3.3 million dollars total to build the house. There are just alumni doing in kind work that brings it down to 2.5 million dollars.
