What’s wrong with being open about your faith and taking a stand for what our great country was founded on? He sounds like Reagan and the Bushes. Makes me want to vote for him even more.

^separation of church and state for one. Secondly, there’s more important things to worry about than gays in the military or prayer in school. We have to stop this madness in Washington and his religious crusade isn’t going to fix it. Ron Paul 2012.

“Separation of church and state” is a concept that was found in a private letter from Thomas Jefferson to a pen pal. I challenge you to find it in the Constitution. The only reference to religion in the Constitution the is First Amendment which says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Congress isn’t establishing a religion by allowing kids to pray in school. Immediately following that, the amendment reads, “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The government does prohibit the free exercise of religion in many cases. I bet you didn’t learn that in public school.
There are many important issues, it’s good to talk about all of them.

Rick Perry is standing for conservative values and telling liberals to take a lap. Definitely TFTC.

The government intervenes when it can be harmful, such as the Snake Handlers. Other than that it’s pretty much fair game. For example, the “religion” practiced by Westboro Baptist Church is now considered legal, as I’m sure you know.

    6. Wilco Frat

The Constitution says the government shall not respect the establishment of any religion; basically, according to the government, religion doesn’t really exist. Frankly, I agree (partially) with FratCzar. There are certainly more important things than a bullshit argument about religion. Honestly, religion isn’t going to fix the clusterfuck, so I honestly couldn’t care less about a candidate’s stance on religion. You can be a goddamn (peaceful, if there is a such a thing) Muslim for all I care, just fucking fix this shit. (Commence all jokes/jabs about Obama being a Muslim…or keep your ignorant, ill-informed views to yourself.)

The separation of Church and state was meant in the context of the time it was written. The Church at the time controlled the government. Why do you think people left Great Britain? They were being persecuted because of their religious beliefs by the Church which ran the government. “separation of Church and state” Means that the Church should have no say in what the government does. It does not mean that there can be no religion.

Alright guys it is time you learned about the Treaty of Tripoli, unanimously ratified in 1797 and signed by then President John Adams.

In the treaty it states “The United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion.”

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tripoli#Translation_and_Article_11

This is not a christian nation, it is a democratic one, of course, I wouldn’t expect perry to know this since he failed American History.

The reality is America is a secular nation with a deistic proclivity. America was founded by Deists with Christian European values. Do unto others and all that. Let he without sin cast the first stone. Love thy enemy. Secular Christians. People who thought Jesus was a visionary not a prophet, but respected the opinions of the common man and protected his right to his thoughts and speech.

Let’s be frank, religious conservatives are about as American as Shariah law. They want the same things they just disagree over the name of their prophet.

scbro & candc jerking each other off? what a surprise.

Right the government isn’t religious. That doesn’t mean Americans aren’t and that sure as shit doesn’t mean elected officials can’t be. That doesn’t mean the American people don’t believe in a value system informed by Christainity or laws that reflect that.
We don’t live in a democracy by a long shot. The “populous” House is restrained. Alhough the Senate is popularly elected. All I can say is what was ubiquitously feared, especially by the Founders, of democratic influence is plainly coming true. Pestering with property rights, undermining the rule of law, and inevitably redistribution of wealth
As for the Perry comment. He’s gone to church his whole life, was a scout, and served. There’s no question in my mind of his moral ethic, which any man knows is most important in decision making.

“The treaty was broken in 1801 by the Pasha of Tripoli over President Thomas Jefferson’s refusal to pay the Pasha’s demands for increased payments. In the course of negotiating with the Barbary nations, each of the Barbary rulers continuously demanded increased payments to maintain peace, even while occasionally capturing U.S. ships.”

America since it’s founding has been a based upon Christian values & our founders understood the importance of faith in God. Christianity has always provided our nation with moral backbone & its no surprise that more secular america is becoming, so the morality of the nation falls too. America was built on Christian principles by God Fearing men & we need to return to that system of thought.

^^The Constitution grants FREEDOM of religion to all citizens, people tend to forget that Christianity is a religion too. I’ll say Merry Christmas every year, and the Constitution grants us the right to do that. Prayer in school is also expressing freedom of religion. It’s not like kids aren’t allowed to pray, teachers just can’t mandate prayer BECAUSE IT SAYS SO IN THE FUCKING CONSTITUTION.

Saying, “Fuck the Constitution” is probably the most un-patriotic and un-american things one could possibly say. It’s very sad where the so called conservative movement is going. Also I might add, the Republican party is becoming an absolute joke. It’s sad to see the masses buying into the rhetoric of big government puppets such as Newt Gingrich, or any of the other candidates for that matter(except Ron Paul and maybe Huntsman).

Did you know nothing about Christmas has anything to do with Christ?

Christ wasn’t born December 25th, that is just a day that Romans celebrated Saturnalia. The Christmas Tree is a pagan tradition to Woden, and Yule is a scandanavian fertility god. So, yea, saying that you respect Merry Christmas is about the dumbest thing to stand up for, considering all you celebrate is based on a random date that was convenient for people to accept.

14 years ago at 8:45 am
    7. Irrfrational

Dammit scbro, Christmas has to do with Christ. It is true that he wasn’t born that day, but it is still used as a token to celebrate his birth. The Christians at the time that were attempting to spread this belief chose December 25th because that was a festive time for some of the non-believers in which they were trying to convince, thus making it more appealing for them to believe in Christ.

That’s weird. The last time I checked, Christ was in the word Christmas. I guess it’s just completely coincidental.

^ Christians took an existing pagan holiday and adapted it so the center of focus was on Christ. That’s why. Almost everything else–decorated trees, mistletoes, gift-giving, yule logs, and feasts–come from pagan celebratory tradition.

So what? So fucking what. I used to hate on mormons, a lot. Crazy religion right? But meeting them over time you begin to realize the religion produces some of the damn finest people you’ll meet. If I had a choice of filling the nation with Mormons or Christians as opposed to atheists I wouldn’t even even blink. The quality of character is incomparable.
Stop judging religion and definitely stop mocking/putting it down. Regardless of what they believe, they tend to be better people then the atheist you meet.

To quote FraTexas from earlier in the thread…

““Separation of church and state” is a concept that was found in a private letter from Thomas Jefferson to a pen pal. I challenge you to find it in the Constitution. The only reference to religion in the Constitution the is First Amendment which says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Congress isn’t establishing a religion by allowing kids to pray in school. Immediately following that, the amendment reads, “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.””

What I gathered from that is that “separation of church and state” is not in the Constitution, and that prohibiting the free exercise of religion when it doesn’t infringe upon the rights of others is, in fact, unconstitutional.
