Sharing Your Netflix Password is Now A Federal Crime

Two judges have ruled that sharing your Netflix password is now a federal crime.

The ruling states it’s illegal to circumvent a company or employer’s computer security by sharing passwords or access to its data. That ruling—and all its potentially terrifying implications for the HBO Go password your buddy’s been letting you “borrow” since 2014—falls under the auspices of the Computer Fraud And Abuse Act (CFAA).

The case involved some guy logging into his job’s intranet after he was fired with help from a co-worker, but the precedent set expands the power of the CFAA in scary ways.

Maybe it’s time to track down all he cheap bastards who have been mooching off your video streaming credentials. At the very least, you should call in the truckload of free beers Schmitty owes you for the assist on every hookup he’s had the last few years.
