Last night, we tweeted out about Shelby Smith’s GoFundMe to help pay for medical bills while she battles a rare form of cancer. Many people came to Shelby’s aid, including Johnny Manziel, Trevor Knight, and many of you.

One man, Steven, responded asking if we could shed light on another tragedy. Army cornerback Brandon Jackson died in a tragic car accident last Sunday and one of his classmates from high school started a GoFundMe to help Brandon’s family pay for the funeral.

Shelby saw Steven’s tweet and donated her own money to help out.

This is awesome. Shelby is someone everyone should look up to. Her attitude is amazing. People just restoring faith in humanity these last two days.

Thoughts and prayers to both Shelby and Brandon’s family as they go through this tough time.

I dislike when GoFundMe is used to promote the person starting it. FYI as a West Point Cadet, the Army covers the full expense of the funeral Plus his parents will receive about $500,000 of SGLI from the government for their loss.

Can you just appreciate the generosity of a human being for once in your miserable life?

I don’t mean to be a dick, but as an A & M student you are required to be covered by insurance. The maximum out of pocket is $367.00.
Her insurance will cover the entire cost.
If the GoFundMe is to ease the financial burden of her parents traveling, taking off work, and staying with her, that is great, but it should specify that and not make it seem as though the money is needed in order to Treat the cancer.

You obviously don’t understand exactly how expensive it is. Medical costs are the number one reason for personal bankruptcy in the US. Between time off work, travel/lodging, deductibles, likely the other 20% of medical costs that insurance doesn’t cover, etc., it’s not crazy to have 60-80k in expenses in a single year. So you’re right, you do need to quit being a dick.

Not to be a socialist here but really healthcare should be more accessible. It kinda sucks when you have to figuratively sell a kidney just to afford to be taken care of.

Also, on her GoFundMe page she says her mother notified her of the Cancer. Shelby us 18 years old-an adult. Under federal HPPA law her doctor is required to tell Her of any diagnosis. It would be illegal for the doctor to leave her out of the loop and just tell her mom. I’m not being a dick but I’d follow Reagan’s advice and Trust But Verify.

Anyone can list an approved contact for their healthcare provider to contact about test results etc. in the event that they cannot get a hold you.
