Rutgers Sigma Chi “Derby Days” Philanthropy Raises $220K For Children’s Hospital, But At What Cost?
The Rutgers chapter of Sigma Chi raised a whopping $220,000 for the Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Jersey last month through their annual “Derby Days” philanthropy, according to NJ.com.
The [week-long] event, which broke a Derby Days previous record of $191,000, involved eight participating Greek organizations that competed against each other in various events, including a field day, auction, Uber challenge, game night and a lip sync dance competition.
The Zeta Tau Alpha sorority broke the record for the highest amount raised by a single team. ZTA raised $48,902, which surpassed the previous record of $42,798.
Sure, they raised a ton of money for sick children, but at what cost?
As Jezebel points out, “Derby Days” is a disgusting example of the patriarchy thrusting its privilege upon compliant sorority girls who are eager to dance for the gazing males’ entertainment and do all of the fundraising work for them.
Never mind the fact that all of the events were organized and planned by the fraternity months in advance — the person who drops the coin in the bucket is the one who does all the work. Never mind that sororities hold events that are the exact same thing but with the genders reversed, like ZTA’s breast cancer philanthropy, featuring one man from each fraternity wearing a bra and putting on a strip tease for the entire sorority, or Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash, where sorority girls coach a group of fraternity guys through a synchronized swim routine. And never mind that nothing else, other than sporting events, brings a campus together for a good time on the scale fraternity philanthropies do.
I mean, just look at what they forced these women to do last year:
Fuck the sick children. Shut this whole thing down. I’m outraged..

10 years ago at 12:46 pmYeah because why help children when you can be a cunt instead?
10 years ago at 12:58 pmThe girl who “failed out because of the derby” should definitely be given another chance at college because she’s obviously deserving of a degree.
