Small Town To Change The Tourism Game, Plans To Build Public Beer Fountain
In an effort to draw in tourists, a town in Slovenia is making a big move that will definitely put it on the map for many people traveling in the region. Zalec, a town of around 5,000, is building a beer fountain that, upon completion, will spurt fresh beer for residents and tourists to drink.
While this is an exceptionally rad concept, it’s not exactly what you think it is. The beer will not be free. You’ll have to pay six euros for three 10.5 fluid once servings of beer. You get a commemorative mug as part of the deal, so in the end, it doesn’t seem like a bad idea to me. The region is known for its hops, so you know the beer will have its own local flavor.
Taxpayers will pay for right around half of the project, while private donors will pick up the other half. Some folks in the area are concerned. They think the money could be going to other public works projects. What a bunch of nerds. Your town has 5,000 people. Want to boost the economy? Build a beer fountain in the town square. The money will be coming in faster than you can count it.
Think about it for a minute.
On top of the revenue that the fountain itself would generate, it would also spur the creation of a variety of related businesses and industries in the area that would boost the local economy. Restaurants, hotels, souvenir shops, and other locally run businesses would be popping up all over the place to serve the tourists who will be coming into town to see and drink from the new beer fountain. Basic stuff, guys.
Some, I’m sure, are worried that a bunch of drunk tourists are going to ruin the town, but I say that’s just a risk you have to assume when you create an awesome drinking related attraction in your city. Money doesn’t grow on trees, people of Zalec. You need to take some risks to reap the rewards.
All in all, I’m a big fan of this idea. If I’m ever in Slovenia, I’ll probably stop by. Around seven bucks for three beers and a cool mug? Yeah, I could get behind that..
