Some Dude Is Selling Other People’s Instagram Photos For $100,000
Need some new wall decor for the dorm room or fraternity house? You’re in luck. For the low, low price of $100,000, you can own someone else’s blown-up Instagram photo.
Richard Prince is currently swindling countless schmucks in New York City out of thousands of dollars for oversized screenshots and he’ll be doing so at the Gagosian Gallery until September 19th.
Steal here for only $90,000. Someone is quite the barterer.
From Gothamists:
“Prince is notorious in the art world for taking other people’s work, ‘appropriating’ them as his own with various changes, and then selling them for large amounts of dough.” And no, he did not get permission for these prints, which are screenshots of the images with one addition from Prince, “a short message [he] posted as the last comment on each one.”
I can’t knock this guy. Richard is the “swimming in another man’s wake” philosophy personified. He realizes he has no legitimate talent himself, takes someone’s selfie off the Gram, calls it art, and makes a killing because there are buffoons out there who will actually buy this shit. Seriously, if you purchased one of these pieces at his gallery, you need to quit life. You’re dropping six figs on something that was literally made in Kinko’s for maybe $25 at the most.
Also, if this is all it takes to be qualified as an artist, I’m fully on board. I’m not a smut peddler running the TFM Girls Instagram account; I’m a misunderstood auteur of sorts. Yeah, that sounds much better. That’s what I’m going with when I finally tell my family what I do for a living..

The phrase “good artists copy, great artists steal” really fits well here

10 years ago at 3:24 pmI’d love seeing him do this to some horrible Fail Friday posts. I mean who wouldn’t want a huge “Man down.” hanging over the fireplace?
