South Carolina Man Mows Lawn Of National Mall Because The Government Sucks

In the wake of a government shutdown that has left thousands of American’s furloughed and all government non-essential employees out of work, a good story finally came out of D.C on Wednesday.

Chris Cox, America’s greatest groundskeeper, said enough was enough this week and decided that he wasn’t going to stand behind government incompetence. Armed with his lawnmower and South Carolina state flag, he set out to accomplish more D.C work. in a day than anybody else has done in months.

“If they shut down our memorials, we’re still going to take the trash out, we’re going to clean the windows, we’re going to cut the grass, we’re going to pull the weeds, we’re going to do the tree work,” he said.

Cox spent the afternoon with his gasoline-powered standard mower cutting the grass in front of the Lincoln and World War II Memorials. There isn’t actually a law against doing the government a favor, even though he was approached by a park official and told he was no longer allowed to cut the grass.

There’s no official sanction for his work, SC Rep Mark Sanford noted. He said Cox told him a U.S. Park Service officer had approached him an hour earlier and “told him he was no longer allowed to do so … though the park service would not maintain these monuments now.”

It doesn’t sound like Cox has any intention to let the government screw up any longer, as indicated by a quote he gave a South Carolina radio station.

“These are our memorials. Do they think that we’re just going to let them go to hell?”
