Unnecessary Study Confirms That Drunk People Don’t Know How Drunk They Are

A recent study indicates that drunk people are poor judges of how drunk they are, something that should not shock a single person on Earth.

Apparently, drunk people resort to judging how drunk they are in relation to others rather than objectively measuring how intoxicated they are.

From Ars Technica:

After a rigorous statistical analysis, the researchers found that people were basing their rank sensitivity not on the drunkest people around them but on the most sober. “It appears that drinkers are more self-aware of their own level of intoxication when in the presence of those who are sober,” they conclude. As a result, we might be able to curb dangerous drinking just by encouraging the presence of “sober ambassadors” like designated drivers in bars and clubs. Our social groups determine how much we drink, but they often nudge us in a healthier direction more than we realize.

You couldn’t pay me enough to be a “sober ambassador.” If your social group “nudges you in a positive direction,” you should strongly consider kicking them to the curb. You have plenty of positive role models in your life, but they aren’t necessarily the people you want to hit the bars with. The more I look into this study, the more it looks like the scientists were just looking to get housed on the job in the name of science. Can’t say I blame them.

95% of the time, if the bar has a ABC meter, we compete for high score.

Best way to know if you drank too much is for you to notice that you are no longer tasting the alcohol, yet still drinking.
