Texas Sigma Chi Shooter Was A Rushee That Didn’t Get A Bid

The gunman from yesterday’s shooting at the University of Texas Sigma Chi house has been apprehended and booked into Travis County Jail, and is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. 18-year-old Daniel Hamilton Magee had expressed interest in joining the fraternity, leaving his name and number with several brothers before being kicked out of a party early Sunday morning after the UT football game.

From the Austin American-Statesman:

The report said members of the fraternity asked an on-site security guard, Edward Earls, to kick Magee out because he was causing problems.

“Magee became upset and had to be physically removed by Earls,” the document said. “When Magee got to the front gate of the fraternity house Magee made verbal threats to return to the party with an AK-47 rifle and shoot up the place.”

About 45 minutes later, Magee returned with two others.

Witnesses told investigators one of the men pulled out a gun and fired one round at Earls, striking him in the foot, the affidavit said.

I could completely mail it in and use the uncreative “looks like someone didn’t get a bid” route. If there was ever a story I could justify using that overplayed angle, it’s this one right here. But I like a challenge, and no one died, so I can just get absurd with it.

This kid seems to have a few screws loose. One could even say he’s maniacal… Maniac Magee. Wow, did we luck out with that last name. Great book, by the way. Now I could just be grasping at straws here, but maybe in his own delusional, crazy mind, Magee thought Sigma Chi would respect that he was a man of his word and has a can-do attitude. He slips them his full name and number (so he can be reached at a later time) before telling those same individuals he’s going to come back and shoot up the place. Magee clearly just wanted to make a memorable first impression. You almost have to respect that type of misguided, youthful optimism. Show ’em you’re not one to be fucked with and have a pretty decent shot and they’ll just initiate you on the spot.

Magee’s going to do just fine in prison.

Glad they didn’t bid him! On a serious, note, hope the security guard is doing okay.

knowing the media and how school treat the greek system, blame will be put on Sigma Chi for not being inclusive, and the shooter had a right to open fire on innocent kids because he didn’t feel safe.

please read in the sarcastic tone i had when i wrote that.

The media will ignore this one, a fraternity being the victim doesn’t fit their narrative

I know it’s an old argument to make, but it’s also perfectly appropriate, what makes you think not having the campus carry law was going to stop him? Graduate high school before taking on college issues, kid.

He’s clearly serious about wanting a bid – and motivated – maybe try spring rush and meet more of the brothers this time.

Went to high school with this kid and he was always about that life. Still completely absurd what he did though, glad nobody got killed.

He wasn’t crazy or anything actually pretty chill, he was just reckless and would never understand the consequences of some of the choices he made and would catch charges left and right. Hopefully he learns from this one.

I went to the same high school as this kid. Not only is he not a student at UT, he dropped out of high school his junior year
