Two of the best generals of all time, FaF. Lee was a patriot who was well respected in the North and should still be. He only fought to defend his homeland, the State that forced his hand. Jackson was a brilliant strategist who exemplifies what it means to be a intellectual and a gentlemen, which is FaF. If you wonder why the South still begrudges the North, simply take a southern history class and learn about radical reconstruction.Easily the most un-American act ever committed against a defeated enemy.
I agree with everything Patrino mentioned, but it should be noted that Lincoln’s original plan for reconstruction was significantly less harsh than Davis’ plan after Lincoln was assassinated.
Good Frattributes and Cotton- Although Lee and Jackson were not in the same fraternity it could be argued that they were brothers by both being part of the “Long Gray Line” of West Point graduates. However, that is not the main reason. The reason Lee’s words were a TFM has to do with the strong bond he had with a man that he considered to be his brother. These words demonstrate that bond perfectly. It illustrates the higher virtues of the TFM, that you are so closely bound to your brothers that when your brother loses his left arm, you feel as if you have lost your right. Everything about the life of Robert Edward Lee of Old Virginia is what we as fraternity men should attempt to emulate, his moves should be our moves.
the Tiger- I’m 95% sure Lee said that after his arm was amputated before Jackson died, if you can find source material saying it was after I’d appreciate seeing it.
Well written response Cadet; while I am still not convinced that it is relevant to TFM, you make a good point. Regarding when Lee actually said this quote, I am almost certain it was after he died, but my only source is the novel “Gods and Generals”. Lee referred to Jackson as his “right arm” because he had divided the Confederate army into two divisions: one led by Jackson and the other by Gen. Longstreet. The quote is famous because of the, for lack of a better word, pun. Anyways, two great generals who led extraordinary lives. That’s coming from a Northerner. Frat on.
Marrying your cousin. TFTC
