Texas Tech Student Murdered In Lubbock Bar Fight

An altercation outside Mesquites Bar and Grill early this morning turned tragic when a Texas Tech junior was fatally stabbed near the college watering hole located off Broadway St. Zachary Kafer, 20, was rushed by friends to the University Medical Center where he later died from wounds and injuries sustained during the dispute.

Detectives arrived on scene at 1:38 a.m. and were able to identify a suspect after a brief investigation. John Henry Allen, also 20, was located at the U-Loft apartment complex, arrested, and booked on first degree murder charges at the Lubbock County Detention Center.

What led to the homicide is still unclear, but with classes not starting until the 21st and Mesquites offering up $1 wells and $5 buckets of beer, you can imagine lost inhibitions most likely played a major factor in the untimely death of Kafer.

Just an incredibly sad situation all around. You’ve got to feel for the parents of Zach. Losing a son over some trivial, mindless disagreement at a bar is something no one should go through. It’s so avoidable. So senseless.

Now I’m not going to pretend like I haven’t been at the forefront of confrontation while out and about. I get it. When you’re liquored up, confidence is off the charts, you don’t want to come off like a pussy, and the idea that any conflict could escalate into a lethal situation doesn’t really cross your mind. You’d like to give the stranger or acquaintance you’re about to throw down with the benefit of the doubt that he’s not capable of shanking or murdering a human being, but honestly, you never truly know.

The older you get, the more you realize just how ridiculous and worthless drunken fisticuffs are, too. Seriously, think about all the stupid shit that usually starts a bar fight. The audacity of some guy just trying to get through a crowded bar accidentally bumping into you. How the next logical step is to swing at him, I’ll never understand.

Use your heads, guys. It’s just not worth it..
