The Miami Marlins Honored José Fernández In The Best Way Possible
Last night was one of the most surreal moments in MLB history. The Miami Marlins found the courage to play their game against the New York Mets just one day after learning they lost not only a teammate, but a best friend. To honor José Fernández’s memory, every member of the Marlins was wearing a number 16 Fernaández jersey, ones which Majestic Athletic worked overtime on Sunday to make them before flying to Miami on Monday to hand deliver them to the team.
But it wasn’t just the honoring of José on the jersey; it is what the Marlins did on the field that will leave a lasting memory.
Dee Gordon, who loved José like a brother, had this to say after the game.
Watching that ceremony pre-game, when the crowd is usually making some noise, the music is playing, and the players are getting ready, was chilling. There was a moment of silence before the game. There was a teary-eyed Giancarlo Stanton warming up in right field, and there was the touching moment of the trumpet playing “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.” Nothing will compare to the moment that Gordon donned José’s batting helmet and stepped in the box right handed to honor his fallen friend before taking the next pitch 400+ feet deep to right. Watching him trot around the bases and letting his emotions show made me tear up a bit. It was what baseball needed after such a tragedy.
So for one night, there was crying in baseball and everyone in the country was a Marlins fan..
Literally bawled trying to watch this game last night. Fuck man why does bad shit happen to good people

9 years ago at 10:41 amChills. Sport can accomplish some great things and baseball proves it time and again. Dee honoring God here makes it even better.
9 years ago at 11:01 amCall me a pussy but I teared up watching the pre game ceremony and seeing Dee Gordon come through first AB wearing Jose’s helmet and hitting a bomb made me lose my shit. Rip
9 years ago at 12:02 pmSome things are so good they seem scripted but not even Hollywood could have done this series of events justice. What we saw happen on Monday night for Jose showed how sometimes it’s more than a game and how for be it a short period of time, that game can help a team, a community, or even a nation heal
9 years ago at 12:23 pmOkay real talk and lap me if you want. I’ll run them for 16. Why are all of the republicans jumping on the bandwagon like they care? Jose Fernández was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. He made three unsuccessful attempts at defecting before he was successful in 2008. He was an illegal immigrant and just recently got his citizenship in 2015. Aren’t these the people you want to deport and close the borders to?
Oh, and fuck Trump
9 years ago at 1:59 pmthis isn’t about politics dipshit
9 years ago at 2:37 pmNo it’s about that fat orange dipshit they wheeled out on stage last night wanting to deport illegal immigrants and close the borders. And you motherfuckers supporting him. This guy was one of them.
Fuck him and fuck you
9 years ago at 7:17 pmMexican illegal immigration is different than cuban illegal immigration. Threre are different laws. Anyone that makes it to the US from Cuba can legally stay here. There is no need to make this political, and even if it was political you would be wrong. Leftists need to stop politicizing tragedies to push their agenda
