These Maps Show What Every State Thinks College Acronyms Stand For
When it comes to university acronyms, it can cause some confusion for the common folk who don’t know their schools. For example, there are a ton of OSUs and OUs. It becomes a hot debate amongst college football fans. South Carolina fans claim they are the USC. Tennessee fans claim they are the real UT. It’s just a mess.
So, what better way to settle this than see what the country thinks about each college acronym. A Redditor polled the college football Reddit community to see what fans think each popular acronym stands for.
Here are the results:
There you have it, folks. No surprise that some states’ results are based on location. But the results are in and UT is Texas, Tech is Texas Tech, and USC is Southern Cal. Sorry, Gamecock fans. You just have to let it go..

9 years ago at 10:46 amI was wondering where Statler and Waldorf had run off to…
9 years ago at 10:55 amHow the actual does Alaska think of MEMPHIS when thinking of UM?
9 years ago at 10:41 amVirginia Tech is actually more irrelevant than a college in Lubbock.
9 years ago at 11:02 amIf its any consolation, I thought it was a solid comment.
9 years ago at 12:00 pmUniversity of Tennessee was established in 1794. Texas became a state in 1845. Sorry but I believe “UT” goes to the first established.
9 years ago at 11:05 amUT has been an embarrassment lately though so no one thinks about them. Texas is always just barely above shitty, sometimes even good, and thus more people associate UT with the team that gets more exposure. History is written by the winning team.
9 years ago at 11:14 amYour logic is sound, and I can’t really argue with it. However, Rocky Top will always be home, sweet home to me. I therefore, respectfully disagree.
9 years ago at 12:42 pmAnd just like every Tennessee fan, you’ll keep saying to yourself “next year we’ll be great”
9 years ago at 2:02 pmHarrison Lee must be a Tater.
9 years ago at 11:05 amNo one in MN calls it UM. It’s the U or U of M
9 years ago at 11:08 amExactly…except Michigan is U of M
9 years ago at 11:11 amWhen people say the U they’re usually talking about Miami
9 years ago at 11:50 amNot in Minnesota.
9 years ago at 12:05 pmFuck Minnesota.
9 years ago at 1:13 pmAwfully aggressive for a Monday, Bobby
9 years ago at 1:32 pmUnnecessary aggressiveness is FaF
9 years ago at 1:35 pmClose, but it’s Da U because none of the football players have ever been to class
9 years ago at 1:26 pmI agree, if they do this poll in Dinky Town then at least 8 out of 10 would call it the “U”.
9 years ago at 1:19 pmDid Maine just not participate. Shocker
9 years ago at 11:32 am?*
9 years ago at 11:59 amWyoming and Maine’s electoral votes should be taken out of consideration. Clearly when faced with polls these idiots use a coin toss.
9 years ago at 11:59 amMaine can’t make up its fucking mind.
9 years ago at 11:59 amHarrison doesn’t know the difference between an acronym and abbreviation.
