Toledo’s Pi Kappa Phi Says Off-Campus Fight Wasn’t Racially Fueled

Members of the University of Toledo’s Pi Kappa Phi are being investigated after being accused of taking part in a racially-fueled fight over the weekend. According to WNWO, the fight occurred at the off-campus fraternity house around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
Rayshawn Watkins, 19, told police that he had been drinking at the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house. … He was at the open party with some friends when members of the fraternity began yelling racial slurs, including the “N-word,” at him, according to police.
Toledo Police say an unidentified suspect then accused Watkins of damaging a string of Christmas lights before yelling “Leave, (n*****)!” repeatedly.
As Watkins and his friends began to leave, the aforementioned suspect and one other unidentified suspect began assaulting him by punching him, kicking him, and yelling racial slurs at him, according to police.
Police say that as the victim’s friends were held back by other fraternity members, other members joined in on the assault on Watkins.

While WNWO was unable to contact fraternity members when a reporter knocked on the door, one fraternity exec got in touch with Toledo newspaper “The Blade.” That’s a badass name for a newspaper. While both sides appear to agree a fight occurred, their accounts about how it all went down seem to vary substantially.
From The Blade:
Ryan Aridi, 23, vice president of philanthropy at the fraternity, said Mr. Watkins and his friends trespassed during a private birthday party. Mr. Watkins damaged the lights, and instigated a fight when members asked he exit, Mr. Aridi said.
…
Fraternity members did not know Mr. Watkins, he said.
…
Allegations that members yelled slurs at Mr. Watkins are false, he said, adding that the fraternity is a diverse and tolerant chapter.‘This had nothing to do with race whatsoever,’ Mr. Aridi said
The accusations are especially interesting since, as one Twitter user points out, there are several students of color in Pi Kappa Phi at Toledo.
@sean2koo do you know how many black guys are in pikapp? This had nothing to do with race, Ray's just trying to save face by saying it was.

@yezzirz @sean2koo a fraternity with black brothers would not disrespect its members by using a derogatory term to describe any black person

@sean2koo why because I know what actually happened and am sticking up for my BLACK boyfriend and his group of brothers?

It’s tough to imagine members of a fairly diverse fraternity went from zero to racist in a matter of seconds, but crazier things have happened. I wasn’t there and I don’t know the real story so I’ll withhold judgements.
The same fraternity made headlines in April 2015 for allegations of hazing. After a temporary suspension of their new membership program and an investigation by the university, Pi Kappa Phi was cleared of any wrongdoing in November.
UT President Sharon Gaber responded to students on Monday in regards to the weekend altercation, saying in an email she was “deeply disturbed” by the allegation. Gaber’s email included times, dates and locations to several diversity forums taking place on campus over the next few weeks. The forums were scheduled prior to Sunday’s incident..

I’m sick of seeing these racist fairy tails that get spread to push an agenda.
10 years ago at 4:36 pmFairies do not have tails. Fairytale is what you are looking for. Despite your stupidity, I agree with the point you are making
10 years ago at 4:38 pmThe fuck are you, the fairy nazi?
10 years ago at 5:06 pmbeat a gay man, it’s homophobia, beat a black man, it’s a hate crime, beat a man, it’s a crime. no one wants to be a man anymore it seems. everyone needs to just be a fucking man.
10 years ago at 8:02 pmSounds like someone was being belligerent and didn’t like being kicked out.
10 years ago at 4:40 pm*kicked out of a party and home he wasn’t even invited to.
10 years ago at 6:25 pmGeed walks in, trashes the house, gets asked to leave then starts a fight. T’GDI’M
10 years ago at 4:55 amSure doesn’t look like he was jumped by numerous fraternity members. Looks like a excitement induced nose bleed at best.
10 years ago at 4:41 pmI call bullshit on the whole racial thing but knowing our nationals they’re gonna be fucked no matter what they don’t look out for their chapters.
10 years ago at 4:49 pmIf a black fraternity would have done this to a white male would this even be news?
10 years ago at 4:58 pmNo, it would be a conviction
10 years ago at 6:01 pmYeah it would definitely be news. “Multiple black males assault student.” And no doubt some of them would be arrested. No one really asks questions when you put a black guy in jail. Which is why our prisons are mostly black
10 years ago at 6:44 pmFuck you
10 years ago at 8:58 pmBlacks consist of 13% of the population but over 80% of violent crime. That is why our darker brothers are in jail.
10 years ago at 8:59 pmThe news would be:
10 years ago at 10:54 pmHeroic Black students beat racist Fraternity member.
No winning in this God damn Liberal world
“A group of his friends and I are trying to get this frat in trouble so if any of you can help and send us quotes or stories like this that has happened to you please let me know”.
No, let’s not search for the few people who did this (presuming his side of the story is accurate) or try and hold people accountable; let’s just try and get them in trouble. Such bullshit.
10 years ago at 5:05 pmIf my newspaper had a name as cool as the blade I would definitely start learning how to read.
10 years ago at 5:31 pmIt really doesn’t matter what Pi Kapp did, they’re already guilty in the eyes of these PC people
10 years ago at 6:12 pmSomeone just got mugged at toledo outside the rec center and they were wearing letters… Gotta believe that’s connected.
10 years ago at 10:25 pmUpdate: earlier today someone tweeted about “pulling up on their house” and then tweeted that he wanted to use his new hand gun.
