UNC Basketball Star Busts His Hand On A Door After A Bad Video Game Beat

To any dude with a pulse, a close game of Madden or NCAA (rip) is edge-of-your-seat entertainment. No matter the time or place, in that moment winning is everything. Losing means having to face that smug, shit-eating, grin on your buddy’s face as they flex their nuts directly in your mug. And winning? You get to be that smug fuck.

So when it was announced today that North Carolina guard Joel Berry II will miss the first four weeks of the season because of a video game related injury, I totally understand what happened because I’ve been there before.

North Carolina Tar Heels senior point guard Joel Berry II broke his right hand last week by punching a door after losing a video game to teammate Theo Pinson and a manager.

“He did a silly thing,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams told ESPN at ACC media day Wednesday. “That’s what it was. One of his greatest characteristics is his competitiveness.”

Coach nailed it. “Competitiveness.” You don’t want someone who is okay with losing a meaningless game of Madden. You’ll win more games with a guy that misses four weeks with rage related injuries than the beta who just takes an L to his boy with dignity. Coaches want guys who show some fire no matter how low the stakes.

If we want to punish anyone, bring down the hammer on those who brought Berry to the brink. If they spend as much time around him as they should, they should know where his limits fall. Speaking from the perspective of a guy who has had a few too many controllers thrown at his head, I can admit that all of those situations were probably preventable. I saw when things started to turn and just kept egging on. That’s on me. These guys probably did the same.

This incident won’t have much impact on UNC’s season. They’ll still be in the mix come March. The first month of the season is mostly out-of-conference tournaments anyway. I just feel bad that this guy is going to get banned from playing video games around the facility. That’s a tough pill to swallow..
