University Of Chicago Cancelled All Classes Today Due To Credible Mass Shooting Threat
That’s such a depressing headline to read. We’re only a couple of weeks removed from Paris, a few days removed from the Planned Parenthood incident in Colorado Springs, and just two weeks ago, Washington College shut its doors as police hunted for a missing student. It’s our sad reality.
The University of Chicago made the call to pull the plug on classes today in the wake of an online threat against the university, something we see all too often.
From UChicagoNews:
The University was informed by FBI counterterrorism officials today (Sunday) that an unknown individual posted an online threat of gun violence against the University of Chicago, specifically mentioning “the campus quad” on Monday morning at 10 a.m. Based on the FBI’s assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday.
The buzz on Twitter is that for one reason or another, the threat was deemed very credible, which is what led to the actual closing of campus rather than simply increased security. Along with the closure of the Hyde Park campus, the university shut down just about everything else bearing its name, leaving the medical center as the sole survivor.
In addition to canceling all classes and events at the Hyde Park campus, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, the University of Chicago Charter School campuses, the University libraries, the Quadrangle Club, and other campus facilities will be closed on Monday. The University of Chicago Medical Center will remain open to patients, with added security measures.
There are nuts among us. It’s just a shame they release their troubles through the terror of others..

10 years ago at 9:50 amSo here’s a thought that would be cool to discuss on the forums but…
If anonymous shooters can shut down a campus, I feel as if it could start a trend. It only takes one anonymous post that the PD defines as credible to shut down the school. In today’s world, most threats are taken credibly. That means any psychopath, shooter or not, can almost single handedly throw an entire university into disarray with little action. Furthermore, if the shooter knows that the only place on campus that has humans in it is the hospital, I feel like that puts the hospital workers at a huge risk. Thoughts?
10 years ago at 9:58 amHopefully these ‘anonymous’ threats aren’t as anonymous as the poster thinks and they get caught, deterring future idiots.
10 years ago at 10:39 amThis has gone too far. In my day, we simply had a pledge pull the fire alarm when we weren’t ready for an exam.
