University Of San Diego Alpha Phi, Delt And Fiji Allegedly Involved In Sexually Exploitative 3-Way Hazing

University Of San Diego Alpha Phi, Delt, And Fiji Involved In Some Sexually Exploitative 3-Way Hazing

Back in February, members of Alpha Phi, Delta Tau Delta, and Phi Gamma Delta at the University of San Diego got involved in a little hazing. According to the investigation, this event was connected to the Alpha Phi Big Sister/Little Sister program. What went down was a little 3-way hazing involving alcohol (oh no!) and some sexual exploitation.

From The Vista:

The letter from Cynthia Avery, PhD., assistant vice president of Student Affairs, to the chapter cited confirmed hazing allegations.

“The incident included alcohol, blindfolds, sexual exploitation, etc.,” the letter stated.

Blindfolds AND sexual exploitation?! You have my ear. Are we talking about like forced sexual acts? If so, yeah that’s bad. Now if we’re talking about like a fun little lap dance or some shit like that, then come on. Just a little sexy time between some students. Details of the actual events won’t be released until the full investigation is complete.

The result of the investigation ended in Alpha Phi getting kicked off campus until 2019. The sorority was found to be in violation of two codes regarding hazing and harassment, intimidation, or hostility due to one’s gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin.

Delt and Fiji? They were just hit with a slap on the wrist.

The two fraternities have each received sanctions for their involvement in the incidents. Fiji and DTD will undergo mandatory membership reviews which will be conducted by their international administrations. Both fraternities will also be required to participate in educational programs involving speakers on hazing, sexual assault, and bystander intervention. DTD also received probation from the university through May 31, 2017. Fiji will be suspended from all social events through December 31, 2016 and be suspended from participating in Fall 2016 membership recruitment.

Overall, not a bad punishment. Fiji has to go through a fall semester without pledges and a social calendar which sucks, but it could be a lot worse. Delt is just on probation so if they keep things clean over the next year, they’ll be fine.

Alpha Phi, on the other hand, will appeal the university’s decision.
