University Of Tennessee Will Not Hold Classes For Their Thursday Night Opener Against App. State

Football is still king in the south. The folks in the SEC seem to love their football just a little more than the rest of the country — maybe because that’s all they have going for them, though. The University of Tennessee realized the importance of football and decided to close down all classes and many campus offices to accommodate their home opener against Appalachian State on September 1.

It’s the right move to do so. Sure, there are going to be academic purists out there who will be outraged that a university would actually cancel classes for a football game. Think about it, though. This is a Thursday early on in the school year. No one will be there. The game starts at 7:30 p.m., so tailgating is starting a noon if you’re a true fan.

Why waste professors’ time to show up and lecture to an empty hall? They don’t want to be there. The students don’t want to be there. It’s just the best move. All Tennessee has to do now is hope that scheduling Appalachian State in a year where they have high expectations doesn’t come back to bite them in the ass. But no team like this has ever lost to a school like App State, right?.
