^^ With that logic, it would be flagrant ignorance of history to suggest that Michael Jordan won 6 NBA championships. I’m fairly certain that S G understands that others were involved and contributed to the win.
You’re right…we were not the only ones that “Won” both World Wars. But in both instances we got a “Win” and a “Save” since both times no one could seem to close the deal until we got involved.
I don’t see how they were “saves.” Both the Allies and Central powers were exhausted by 1917, and even though Russia got knocked out, it’s not like there was any chance that Western Europe would get overrun by Germany or Austria-Hungary. If anything, the war would’ve ended in a draw.
As for World War II, Germany was already starting to suffer by the time the United States got involved. The British and Commonwealth countries pushed Rommel back during Operation Crusader and El Alamein before the Americans even landed in North Africa. Though the Soviets had a lot of trouble during the Germans’ initial invasion, they began dominating in early 1943. After that they were pretty much in retreat throughout the rest of the war. Thank god Hitler decided to be an idiot and invade Russia, or things very likely wouldn’t have turned out as smoothly for the Allies. And lastly, let’s not forget the Chinese, who lost 3 million soldiers valiantly holding off the Japanese since ’37.
Don’t get me wrong, the US contributed enormously to the war effort. Nobody denies that. But I wouldn’t say that we “won” or “saved” Europe.
Kitto, I’m replying with validity predicated in the fact that i know a lot more about history than you do. America did not want to enter either war, hence isolationist policy. However, those quasi-homo euro allies of this great country couldn’t complete the task at hand and we had to jump in the fight. Once we did, in both fucking cases, shit started blowing up, and magically whatever side we were on began to dominate. Do the math, actually you would be better off letting an educated person do it for you. Helpful hint- read books… not wikipedia.
I’m a history/english double major, so I own and read many books a year. Last year alone I read 188.
Nobody — France, UK, Russia, etc — denies the influence the United States had on the outcome of the war. However, it’s arrogant to say that we “saved” Europe. Hitler never would’ve conquered Russia. Any historian will tell you that that was his biggest error. While we without a doubt brought it to a quicker finish for the Allies, the German armies were already beginning to experience huge losses by the time we hit North Africa. About a million soldiers had already been killed on the Eastern Front before the United Nations even invaded Italy, and another 2-3 million would eventually be killed by May of ’45. That accounted for about 70-80% of the German military casualties. The war was as much of an American effort as it was a Russian, British, French, and hell, even Canadian effort.
America. Nothing wrong here.
