Vandy Football Coach Says Being Terrible Is His Team’s Achilles Heel Right Now, Is Not Wrong

It’s been a rough season for Vanderbilt football. After an opening night loss to C-USA powerhouse Western Kentucky, Vanderbilt has struggled to produce anything of substance on the football field. The Commodores are 2-4, 0-3 in conference play, with a four-point win over Middle Tennessee State and a lopsided victory over something called “Austin Peay.”
It’s cause for concern at a program that, only a few years ago, had seemingly figured out a formula for success at an “academics first” SEC school.
Head coach Derek Mason, who essentially everyone expects to see fired at the end of the season, has some stunningly accurate analysis about his football team.
Mason: We have to find a way to be better. Right now, that's the Achilles heel for us.

Wow. Most coaches would say “injuries” or “turnovers” when asked about an Achilles heel, but Mason said the Achilles heel, which, mind you, is a weakness in spite of an overall strength, is that his football team kind of sucks.
“Yeah, things are going pretty well this season. If we just didn’t completely and totally fucking suck I’d say all the pieces are there for a conference championship run.”
This is also the man who felt like his season was going to turn around earlier this year when he found his secret piece of paper that he used to win games.
From Fox Sports:
But after a season in the football wilderness now Vandy fans can rest easy. Because Derek Mason has found the piece of paper that he lost last season.
“I had a sheet that I had been looking for for the last 18 months,” Mason said. “Lo and behold, about two weeks ago, it popped up. I found it in my library of football books.”
What he found was a detailed list of game situations and what he should do in each of them. According to his timeline, he had it when he accepted the job at Vanderbilt last January (or shortly thereafter). He was without it, though, when the Commodores went 3-9 and failed to win an SEC game for the first time in five years.
“I had already gone through that list and really remembered a couple of items on there that needed to be checked off,” Mason said. “Now, I feel really good about what we’re doing and where we’re at.”
Of course. His football game situation cheat sheet with all the answers like “punt on fourth down” or “throw it on third and long.”
Sorry, Vandy football fans (if you exist), maybe next year things will turn around..

11 years ago at 11:03 amIt’s always a joy when Tennessee plays at Vandy. The ratio is 60% Tennessee fans 20% Vandy fans and 20% unsold seats.
11 years ago at 11:12 amAt least all of us Vandy fans are Vanderbilt students or alumni while Tennessee fans have never stepped foot in a college classroom.

11 years ago at 2:21 pmI hate to admit it, but I actually enjoyed this article. This is the problem with fake writer accounts. You shouldn’t waste good content by filing it under Holt!
