Video Of Athens Police Officer Beating Drunk Fraternity Member Surfaces
Back on June 13, Athens police was called to a local Marriott hotel in response to an intoxicated trespasser. The trespasser was 19-year-old UGA student Michael Roquet, who is also a member of Phi Kappa Tau. A 17-year veteran of the force, Jonathan Fraser, led Michael to a parking lot next to the Phi Kappa Tau house where he asked him to go inside. Michael did not comply. After breaking free of Fraser’s hold, Roquet attempted to go inside the house when Fraser took him to the ground and beat him with his baton.
Here is the video of the incident (The incident begins around the 6:55 mark):
In his initial report, Fraser made mention that Roquet had struck him, and that is why he used excessive force. This video shows that Fraser was lying. He also tried to justify his decision because he was “tunnel visioned” and “knows he is out of shape.” Fraser also failed to comply with the protocol of calling for medical assistance for the injured student. Roquet suffered a concussion and had multiple bumps on his head.
On July 3, the Athens Police Department fired Fraser for his actions.
From Red And Black:
Jonathan Fraser, a 17-year veteran officer with the Athens-Clarke County police, was fired July 3 after an internal investigation concluded that he used excessive force in arresting 19-year-old student Michael Roquet during an incident early in the morning on June 13.
“This kind of action, of course, is not going to be tolerated by the Athens-Clarke County police department,” said ACC Police Chief Scott Freeman. “And I have to say this – and I keep re-iterating this – this is not typical for an Athens-Clarke County police officer. It is very embarrassing for the police department, but we are taking ownership of it because this is not who we are as an agency.”
Good on Athens police to rid themselves of Fraser. Should Michael have complied with the initial requests to go in the house? Yes, but Fraser had no right to beat this kid down for it..

10 years ago at 10:07 amIn the spirit of my super-deep Tuesday morning thoughts, when some dirtbag gets beat by the cops while drunk, acting suspicious, and refusing to follow lawful commands I usually side with the cop. But I can relate to the plight of the misunderstood, yet heavily intoxicated fraternity gentleman. I can’t help but wonder if the guy getting beaten was instead a gangster-looking fellow of color in downtown Chicago doing the exact same things this guy did, if most of the people here including myself wouldn’t have given the video a second glance. I’m going to ponder these thoughts for another 10 minutes or so until I take a nap.
10 years ago at 12:09 pmTotally agree, kid should’ve gone into the house when the cop told him to. Cop overreacted but why is it so hard for people to just listen to police and be respectful. The kid even bowed up on the cop at one point.

10 years ago at 10:18 amI wish I was frat enough to roll with you, Da Man.
10 years ago at 10:19 amYeah classic frat guy. Paying off cops after they drug girls and spout racist remarks all the time. You guys need to get a gist of the real world.
10 years ago at 10:23 amHa fuck you stallion. I have more laps
10 years ago at 10:51 amWhy is an out-of-shape cop being sent to deal with a possibly physical situation
10 years ago at 10:15 amI think the only reasonable course of action would be to take to the streets of Athens, flip some cars, burn down some businesses, and anything else that tickles our anarchic fancies.
10 years ago at 10:15 amI would agree if it were any town but Athens. But I don’t want to burn down bourbon street. Where else would I see scantily clad women dancing on top of tables.

10 years ago at 1:13 pmI thought white people only did that when they lost sporting events?
10 years ago at 10:46 amShine my shoes.
10 years ago at 11:09 amWe also do it when we win sporting events.
10 years ago at 11:09 amYou…you’re just to easy.
10 years ago at 10:56 pmReal life Todd Storm?
10 years ago at 10:18 amThe cop lied and used excessive force but that kid was given ample time to GTFO and for some reason he just wanted to hang out with the cop so IDK how to feel about this one
10 years ago at 10:18 amWe need to get in touch with our inner feelings…
10 years ago at 10:22 amIDK how I feel either LOL. That kid should have STFU right?!!?!?
10 years ago at 10:22 amSteve, I actually have to agree with you on this one. He told the kid to leave multiple times, then threatened to arrest him if he didn’t. The kid wouldn’t go until after he was resisting arrest. Yeah, the cop went ape shit, but the kid fucked himself over
10 years ago at 11:03 amYou both sound stupid. He didn’t leave soon enough, therefore the beating is justified? That parking lot is also part of his home, by the way. So he had already left before even being told to leave. Didn’t announce why he was even arresting him, the guy does leave and attempt to go inside (exactly what the cop wanted), etc. If the cop didn’t want to talk to him, go sit in the fucking car. And so on… Now please, justify the baton to the head for me? When exactly was that reasonable and justified?
10 years ago at 11:30 amShit man that’s awful. I’m from Athens and I’ve met some of these guys before and they’re all great guys
10 years ago at 10:18 amI agree but your name sucks
10 years ago at 10:34 amI’m surprised its been ten minutes already and there is yet to be a straight outta junior high thug commenting “fuck the police”
10 years ago at 10:20 amHe only swung his baton twice but by the way he is breathing you’d think he just outran Usain Bolt
10 years ago at 10:21 amThe beating begins around the 7min mark. Thanks for wasting 5 min of my life
