Weapons Seized By Police After Shots Fired At UT Rio Grande Valley Kappa Sigma Initiation

This morning around 12:15 a.m., police responded to two dozen calls about multiple shots fired on a ranch by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Four different departments dispatched officers along with a helicopter to assist.

State troopers estimated between 40 to 50 individuals on the ranch from the sky and attempted to contact the group with a loudspeaker. With no response, they made their move and discovered 54 Kappa Sigmas conducting initiation. Four members were cited after admitting to discharging the guns during the ceremony and the weapons were seized pending investigation.

“Officers activated red and blue over-head patrol unit lights to announced police presence and upon doing so, at least three shots were fired from within the ranch,” according to [Alton Police Chief Enrique] Sotelo.

Investigators weren’t able to determine whether or not the three shots police heard were directed at officers, according to Sotelo.

The balls on Kappa Sigma, seeing as they made it appear even remotely possible they shot at law enforcement. No chance, Police Chief Enrique. Guarantee these kids were three sheets to the wind spraying bullets to celebrate their newly initiated brothers, completely oblivious to the presence of law enforcement. Classic P.D. near a university just chomping at the bit to get in on some real action. Thankfully, no one was trigger happy or this may have turned tragic.

And all of this went down a stone’s throw away from hitting some coyotaje crossing the border in the dome. Why wouldn’t the Kappa Sigs think they were free to make it rain ammunition? A south Texas ranch right by Mexico? Yeah, I’m expecting firearms. Pretty sure shots are fired for even the smallest accomplishments around those parts.
