West Chester SAE Single-Handedly Saves Four From Burning Home, Puts Out Fire
Daniel “DJ” Matthews was walking home on March 6 from the Fame Fire Company, where he serves as a volunteer firefighter, when he heard smoke alarms going off nearby.
Matthews followed the smell of burning wood to a house filled with smoke. He quickly called 911. Then, after scoping out the house, Matthews saw that the fire started in the kitchen. He also noticed the television was on, meaning people were likely still inside.
Wearing his street clothes, Matthews entered the home, where he found a resident sleeping in front of the TV. After waking him up and bringing him outside, the resident alerted Matthews of three more people upstairs. Matthews ran back inside and got them out, too. By then, a police car showed up. The officer gave Matthews a fire extinguisher, and Matthews went back inside yet again to put out the flames.
By the time the firefighters showed up just moments later, the fire was extinguished.
Last week, the mayor and city council presented Matthews with a certificate honoring his brave actions.
From Daily Local News:
“He was a one-man band there,” said Chief Mike McDonald. “This was all within minutes. The fire trucks hadn’t even arrived yet.”
It was almost a right person at the time situation.
“Timing was everything,” McDonald said. “I would say if he didn’t come across that call, it could have been possible the people could have been significantly injured or have fatalities. Everything lined up just right.”
It was a right person at the right time situation — the right person with firefighter training and massive testicles.
There is nothing more badass you can do than save strangers from a burning building. It is physically impossible to be more badass.
Though Matthews single-handedly extinguished the fire in that house, he undoubtedly ignited several fires in the loins of women across the West Chester University campus. Follow your training, Matthews..

9 years ago at 2:52 pmI was gonna make a joke about how being a hero is a TFM. But damn, what that guy did was several steps above what I would consider impressive. I’m glad people like him exist.
