Clemson Student Offended By Mexican Sombreros Turns Out To Be A Huge Hypocrite
Students at Clemson recently complained about the university’s dining hall using sombreros and festive decorations for a Mexican themed night. Now, when I say “students,” I mean only about two students, but it was enough to cause a campus wide conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #CUfiestafiasco and an eventual apology from the university.
Here’s the funny thing, though: One of the most vocal students offended by the dining halls’ alleged racist use of sombreros was totally cool with using sombreros and stereotypical Mexican imagery for a group of which she was the leader.
Clemson junior Mitzi Gamez tweeted the following, but has since deleted it:
She followed those comments up with an interview with student newspaper The Tiger News:
“They serve Mexican food all the time; that wasn’t the problem,” said junior general engineering major Mitzi Gamez, who serves as one of the co-presidents for the Latinos Unidos organization on campus. “It was the costumes and the way the students took that, like grabbing sombreros from workers and asking ‘Does this make me look illegal?’”
“I shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable eating my lunch,” Gamez continued. “And I wasn’t the only one who felt that, but I was one of the ones able to voice my opinion effectively on social media.”
Strong words. Except, as the Badger Pundit points out, the Latinos Unidos club promoted Super Taco Night last year with a picture of a stereotypical Mexican in a sombrero holding tacos. Yes, Gamez was a part of the organization when that went down, too. She was also the treasurer at the time.
Hey everybody SACNAS has invited everyone to join them!!

Irony is awesome. In fact, the Badger Pundit captured a bunch of Gamez’s tweets and they’re all pretty awful.
The only good thing that came out of this “controversy” was getting to see Fox News/ National Review hottie Katherine Timpf scoff at how ridiculous it all is.
See how this fraternity managed to get out of trouble for their offensive party…

I’m not worried. Trump will put it in its place
11 years ago at 12:50 pmI’ve seen numerous sketches of people pretending to be white and they’re fucking funny I don’t understand why people become offended
11 years ago at 2:02 pmEverything she wrote was in English. As a proud white male, I am offended that she is using the language of my people.
11 years ago at 2:08 pmOne retweet and two favorites…she’s effective as hell
11 years ago at 2:21 pmTo clarify, I took that screenshot shortly after Campus Reform posted a story on Mitzi Gamez (without naming her), about a day after Mitzi sent the tweet. It’s possible she got more retweets or favorites later in the day, before she deleted the tweet. Still, good point in general — it’s not like, in the day after she tweeted, she attracted an avalanche of support for her professed view that Clemson dining was somehow mocking Mexican culture.
11 years ago at 5:14 pm@Gamez, Take a lap on your teeny, tiny bicicleta.
11 years ago at 2:21 pmI hope the Internet destroys her.
11 years ago at 2:58 pmMy family is from Germany originally so I’m gonna go be offended by people drinking beer and see if I get on TV.
