Louisiana Governor Threatens To Shut Down LSU Football

Last night, Louisiana Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards addressed the state about the current budget crisis. He noted that schools across the state could run out of money by April if his tax increases are not passed. This means that the schools will shut down. He also sent out a dark message about college football:

Here’s the full quote:

“If you are a student attending one of these universities, it means that you will receive a grade of incomplete, many students will not be able to graduate, and student-athletes across the state at those schools will be ineligible to play next semester. That means you can say farewell to college football next fall.”

Technically, that includes every school in Louisiana, but I feel like the message isn’t as strong if you’re threatening to shut down Louisiana-Monroe or Louisiana Tech football. Want to really get people talking? Go for the golden jewel of the state: the LSU Tigers.

You’ve got to think that LSU will still be building their massive L-S-U shaped lazy river. I’m positive that these are just scare tactics in order to push forward an agenda. No one actually believes that LSU football will be lost next year, right?

I spoke with our resident LSU guy, Bogey Wells, to get his reaction on the whole thing. He didn’t go into much detail, but had this to say: “Yeah, fuck him.” I think most of us here share the same sentiment.

Remember with Rick Perry just forgot the government agencies he wanted to shut down as part of his fucking platform? That’s like a brain surgeon accidentally opening your chest cavity.

I can’t believe a state run mostly by democrats and inhabited by a large amount of “welfare is great” citizens is having money issues. Shocker.

Our state’s problems largely are about spending and not revenue. Over the last 10 years or so our budget has gone up 40% but our GDP is only up 25%. I vote republican (and attended Trump in Baton Rouge last night, which was awesome) so it pains me to say most of the blame lands on Bobby Jindal for this. John bel Edwards has no idea how to fix the problem and insinuating LSU could shut down or lose football is simply retarded. Literally no chance.

you clearly know nothing about the situation, so let me waste my time and educate you a bit. “a state run mostly by democrats”- the newly elected governor is the only statewide elected Democrat. second, he’s been in office for exactly 1 month, meaning everything happening now is a result of the the entirely Republican policies of the last 7 years. no, LSU football will not be shut down. but hey, it got your attention. now get back to your intramural team(most likely the B squad) and take a lap.

It must really irritate you that the 10 poorest cities in the US are all run by Democrats.

Democrats sure have a knack for blaming the Republicans that came before them when shit goes bad.

The only president to balance the budget in the last 50 years was a democrat.

You made the mistake of supporting democrats on a website that caters to youths living beyond their actual means and relying upon government and older generations (dad) to subsidize their living.

He forgot that LSU is one of the football programs that consistently makes money for the school.

Outside of division 1 maybe, across the board a majority of teams especially Power 5 conference teams bring in money for their school and help pay for other athletics.

You can thank Title IX for that. If schools weren’t forced to constantly pump money into sports that result in massive net losses this wouldn’t be an issue.

I agree, but keep in mind that a major sport like baseball still results in a net loss at many schools across the country. Title IX is still an atrocity though.

Football is about 50% of the schools profits. But all the rest (besides maybe Basketball) are just dead weight

This isn’t an athletic department problem. LSU football makes enough money that it can sustain itself and many other sports. If the schools aren’t funded, that means the players technically aren’t in school, which means they can’t play football.
