Texas A&M Football Is Somehow Making The Longhorns Look Functional
For the better part of the last few years, the Longhorns have sort of become a laughing stock in the college football world. Once a proud tradition is now being mocked by many fans across the nation. Even last week it seemed to have hit a new low when Sterlin Gilbert turned down the Longhorns’ first offer. Even SMU was looking prettier at that point.
Thanks for making Texas the laughing stock of college football. SMU really appreciates it. @gregfenves

Since that tweet, Texas has hired Gilbert and a little stability has been restored. The Longhorns heated rival over in College Station? Not so much.
Just last week, former 5-star QB Kyle Allen announced that he was transferring out of A&M. His top place he wants to go? Reportedly Oklahoma to be the next Baker Mayfield. But all is good in Aggieland right? They still have the number one quarterback from the 2015 class in 5-star Kyler Murray right? No need to panic.

Oh. Well maybe now it’s time to start panicking. The possible transfer has set off a chain reaction of events. 4-star WR Quartney Davis was committed to the Aggies. That was before this all went down. Davis took to Twitter and decommitted.

5 minutes before he tweeted this out, he quote tweeted something about Kyler with the caption “Wow. SMDH.” While the Murray decision isn’t final, it’s looking more and more like Jake Hubenak will be the starting QB for the foreseeable future.
Let’s take a look at all QBs who have signed with Sumlin:
1) Matt Davis: transferred to SMU
2) Kenny Hill: transferred to TCU
3) Kohl Stewart: Drafted to MLB
4) Kyle Allen: Transferring
5) Kyler Murray: Possibly transferring

The loss of these players is an indictment of the mediocrity that has always existed at A&M. Without the occassional flash in the pan, they are a team that will only win 6 to 8 games each year. That was the case when they were with the Big 12 and things haven’t got any easier since moving to the defense-laden SEC. An arguement could be made that Murray was not a good fit for an SEC QB due to his stature. He may be a better fit in a PAC 12 system.
Coach Sumlin has been riding the Manziel train since 2012. A point could be argued that he his success stems from Manziel winning the Heisman due to beating Alabama, but Manziel wasn’t even on the field for the play that sealed Alabama’s fate. Since then, the major losses at key positions combined with the inability to contend for a conference title has put him on a hot seat. I would be surprised if he is fired this off-season, but he knows that next year, he MUST win 10 games to keep his job. I just don’t see that happening with the talent (or lack thereof) he has on campus now or coming in next fall.
