To start with the most recent happenings, there’s sort of a war going on against men who press womens’ boundaries at all. I’m not saying men should be gropy buffoons, but at some point you’ve gotta take a leap of faith and see how a girl responds to escalation. But I think the main problem starts much farther back. The “lovable loser” beta male has been championed by popular media, so young boys continually watching their favorite movies will tend to drift towards being this kind of guy – you know, the one who’s a total bitch and can’t make a move on a girl to save his life but somehow finds some sort of power or courage that lets him do something great and get the girl (movies I’ve recently watched that come to mind are Adventureland and the new Spiderman series. The problem is that in real life, you don’t get special powers and courage is a lot easier said than done, so most guys end up staying in the “bitch” stage for a very long time, if not forever. Meanwhile, the masculine stereotype is often a villain in these films, being demonized to children. Basically, we should be exposing our young boys to media that exemplifies what a man should be, not some whiny bitch.
